What does everyone reckon it's chances are, then? Some pretty strong competition there. :(

Living in Canada, I'd not heard of "Eden Lake" before. Looked it up, and it looks like a good film, but with extremely disturbing subject matter.

Best Thriller and Best Actor should be in the bag.

Best Newcomer
Robert Pattinson
Gemma Arterton
Jim Sturgess
Toby Kebell
Hayley Atwell

Maybe - I'd say it's between Arterton or Sturgess.

Best Thriller
No Country For Old Men
Quantum of Solace
Changeling
Gone Baby Gone
Eagle Eye

If it weren't for No Country for Old Men, Quantum of Solace would have this in the bag. It's in with an outside shot.

Best Actor
Daniel Day Lewis (There Will Be Blood)
Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man)
Christian Bale (The Dark Knight)
Daniel Craig (Quantum Of Solace)
Johnny Depp (Sweeney Todd)

It's a really strong field, but I'd say a number of those are more likely than Craig for Quantum of Solace.

Best Actress
Angelina Jolie (Changeling)
Ellen Page (Juno)
Sally Hawkins (Happy Go Lucky)
Helena Bonham Carter (Sweeney Todd)
Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace)

Probably not. It was a very good performance, though.

Best Soundtrack
Mamma Mia!
Sweeney Todd
RocknRolla
Quantum of Solace
There Will Be Blood

Sadly, Mamma Mia! might have this in the bag. Sweeney Todd deserves it, though.

:(

I completely disagree. Infact, I'd say without a doubt that those were it's least likely wins.

The best Bond-related performance out of all those was David Arnold's soundtrack. Unfortunately, I don't think he'll win, nor do I think anyone else will either. The only one with a chance I think is Gemma Arterton but she was hardly in the film.

My predictions are:

Newcomer: Robert Pattinson
Thriller -- No Country For Old Men
Actor -- Daniel Day-Lewis
Actress -- Ellen Page
Soundtrack -- Mamma Mia!

I probably agree with some of this with the exception of Day Lewis
and Page.
These awards are given by the public so Bale or Depp will win because of their popularity. Jolie will get for Actress Im afraid.
Gemma unfortunately doesn't have a chance against this disgusting Pattinson. :(
And of course Mamma Mia will get for sound. But I really think it's unfair to compare sure hits from the 70s and new music score for for example by Arnold. Score must compete with score and OST with compilation of songs with another one. But again how can U compare OST for RocknRolla and Mamma Mia... Strange... Different beasts IMHO

It's true that these awards are voted for by the public, but I'd give Empire readers a bit more credit than I would those of "Take a Break" or "Nuts" magazine. That being said, they are nominated so enough people must be voting for them, so anything is possible I suppose. The fact that Iron Man is up for best film is a bit bewildering. :(

Why? It was quite popular. Don't know about its BO in the UK but 300 mil in US says something. And critically it was praised, so the nom is no surprise.

Yes, and I liked it myself. But to suggest it was one of the five of the very best films of the year is very surprising. So it made a lot of money and got decent reviews. Where was Transformers nomination? I think it's junk, but Empire itself gave it 4 stars.

Though I think it's overrated IRON MAN got better reviews generally than TRANSFORMERS did and even appeared in some critics top 10 lists last year.

But still. One of *THE* five best films made AT ALL last year?! Come on.

That's no more improbable than the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences trying to convince us that THE READER(which was poorly, deservedly so, reviewed) was one of the five best films of last year.

I'm starting to think Gemma really didnt have anything on under that trench coat in the film. Even in real life she barely wears anything at all!

Gratly (and pleasantly) surprised about Gemma's win! I was 1000 % sure this awfully pretty boy Pettinson would be the winner.
So happy about Qos getting something. B)

But Bale... He was nothing special imho.

Apparently the lighting at the Empire awards didn't meet with his approval.
