What comments did you hear from casual fans, whether your friends, colleagues or people at the theater?

Here are some I've heard:-

- "Great Bond movie, dark and gritty"

- "Daniel Craig is great as Bond (and the girls say he is sexy)"

- "I prefer Bond to be a bit more fun - like Goldeneye. We need Bond jumping off cliffs into planes! That was awesome!"

- "Too serious"

- "Bond should be suave and sophisticated. Not a killing machine. I prefer him to use brains not brawn"

- "It was like Die Hard with James Bond in it"

What comments, good and bad, have you heard???

Some from friends:

- "It's ok, not as good as Casino Royale."

- "You REALLY didn't have to see Casino Royale to work out what was going on."

- "That was awesome!"

- "WOW, much better than i'd thought!"

- "I was expecting a decent action/thriller. Instead I got a run of the mill Bourne rip off!"

- "Oh Look, Bond's invincible again!"

- "There was too much action, too generic!"

- "I was wondering how it was gonna start... 'Gunbarrel gunbarrel gunba... Mountain!'"

- "I liked the arty, silent restraunt shootout!"

- "Yep, Bond is back!"

- "I loved it!"

- "It was amazing!"

- "Daniel Craig is hot!"

One close friend of mine said that it was :( and she wsnted more like Casino Royale. I asked her if she would watch the next one with Craig and she said she wouldn't. She never liked Bond before CR.

My sister: "I didn't think there was a lack of psychological/emotional development at all! I mean, sometimes Bond waited a bit before he brutally killed everyone, didn't he?"

I suppose my best friend is a casual fan. He's a Moore Bond fan, MWTGG is his fave. He enjoyed QOS. He thinks acting wise Craig's the best Bond. He only would like a little more humour but not over the top (He assured me because this is where we differ.), and wants a little more skin, not necessarily nudity, but other than that he's quite happy with the new movies.

Coming out of the cinema

"Wasn't as good as Casino Royale".
"Just seemed like a normal action movie"
"I almost nodded off".

I'm sure there were some positive comments but I didn't hear them, people didn't seem to enjoy the movie much. I can't really print what I was saying! Nonetheless, for the sake of balance,

guy at work early 20s "I reckon that was the best one".
girl at work late 20s "Pretty good but a bit of a bloke's film really".
mate early 30s "Would have been brilliant if I could see what the **** was going on".

Funny. Seems that if a person hates QOS, then all other comments either from friends or strangers, would be the same negative view. Hmm, very strange.

As for me, a friend of mine like it and another didnt. I think it all comes to whether you are able to understand the story.

Male, late 30s -- "I didn't understand it."
Female, late 30s -- "It was good."
Male, 50 -- "It was missing the traditional Bond elements."
Female, mid-50s -- "The shaky cam is making me dizzy."

All agreed that Casino Royale was better.

A lot of my friends seemed to like it just as much as Casino Royale. One mentioned that it just kept on moving along and you actually had to pay attention (a good thing) to have a general idea of what was going on.

I am yet to see it with ANYONE who didn't like/love it. There's a consensus that it's not the revolutionary masterpiece that CR was, due largely to the fact that Craig's sophomore film doesn't have the added advantage of being fresh, it's a little less traditionally Bond, and the script was of a different structure.

But overall, this film is getting high marks from non-Bond-fanatics.

Whoever I talk to about the film, one re-occurring theme is that they think Craig is the best Bond.

From some of my friends:

"I though it was good."

"The action got numbing after a while."

"We sat waaaaay too close."

"Daniel Craig was sex on toast. Loved it."

"That was awesome."

So... mixed reviews. I personally thought it had some editing flaws, but otherwise loved it.

I have to admit, from people who liked the movie (I estimate about three-quarters of the people I've seen it with or talked to about it) I've heard far more elaborate "reviews" (obviously verbal, they weren't writing any of this down). Those who didn't like it were generally brief in their analysis, although the most common complaints I encountered were...

"There were too many plot threads."
"Who was that guy in Bond's trunk?"
"They should have had John Cleese. He was great in CR."
"Is the guy with the eye patch Le Chiffre?"

Err... okay, so the last one was from CR. :) Speaking of which, after CR, I heard "good, but not as great as Goldeneye." :(

My mother, step-dad and little sister have seen the movie 4 times, which is pretty cool of them. I'm not sure the saw CR that much! My mom had questions still about Vesper and Corrinne that was the only sticky point for her. She's 53, loves Connery but when she saw QOS she was like "Thank you for unpc-ing Bond!"

I was at the laundromat yesterday and these two men were talking behind me. I couldn't make out every thing they said but it went like this,

man 1: "Sean Connery he ain't-" I couldn't make out the rest of the sentence.
man 2:"An' that Pierce Brosnan fella-" again they lowered their voices so I couldn't hear the rest of that.

One of the men: "This new guy they got, he does a lot of action."

Welcome to Indiana! :(

A couple of people at work saw it over the weekend and found it disappointing. My brother has said on reflection he too is now disappointed with it.

The criticism seems to be the usual suspects too - lack of coherency in action scenes, didn't feel involved, too rushed, lack of decent storyline, not enough quieter moments in the film.

There is definitely a pattern emerging here. These were all people who loved CR too. My mate may have summed it up perfectly by saying going into CR he wasn't expecting anything that great, and was completely blown away afterwards, yet with QoS, the expectations were now extremely high because of CR, and it didn't live up to it.

Is QoS a misunderstood masterpiece, or a film EON just didn't get quite right this time round, despite having decent intentions while making it?

So far entirely positive, scattered with a little confusion. Fortunately, I’ve been able to allay the latter symptom after a couple minutes of explanation.

Well, it definitely shows the problem with expectations. Hell, in my last post, I forgot to include what was possibly my favorite complaint:

"I didn't know it was going to be a sequel."

:( For some people, simply being a sequel tainted the whole film.

And yes, I heard complaints about Q, Moneypenny, and other thankfully absent gimmicks not being present. I think many weren't as harsh on CR about it because (1) they accepted it as a reboot, but think the end of that film means we should be back to "tradition" already, and (2) quite honestly, CR was a more colorful film. QoS purposefully eschews the lush CR style in favor of Spartan simplicity. After all, imagine if Dr. No followed Thunderball.

Received the following text from a mate as I came out of seeing QoS for the first time (he'd been at another screen): "Terrific. Much better fun than Casino Royale."

And from my mother, a casual Bond fan since Dr.No and now in her 70s: "That was fantastic. And much better than I was expecting."

I've met a couple of people who liked it, though I think not as much as me, but sadly the four people I went with were disappointed by it, and another described it as "the biggest load of bollocks ever" and told everyone to "never" see it. Can't win them all I guess.

Bond movies have a way of inspiring poetic hyperbole. I remember the looks on the faces of many Moore fans when I came out of CR. You don't even want to know what they said...

The worst thing I've heard from all of my friends was that "It was alright, but Bond wasn't really suave enough." That came from two people, one guy and one girl, while the rest of my friends all loved it. They still prefer Casino Royale but they definitely enjoyed this film. I actually went to the movie for my second time a couple days ago with a friend who hadn't seen it yet. His parents didn't really like it but at the end of the film he was telling me how he couldn't understand why, that the film had plenty of plot and "allowed for you to figure things out on your own." That made me happy. :(

I either knew them already, spoke to them briefly before or after seeing the film... or they were wearing their Roger Moore eyebrows and detachable mole. :(

But seriously, in my experience, one of the first things people mention when discussing Bond is who their favorite actor in the role was. Then again, some of the people I know who most loved CR cite TSWLM as their favorite Bond film, so maybe Moore fans are just a diverse lot. :)
