Now with a few days of "solace", I've had time to reflect.

As it goes with Bond films over the series and years, I've often found and experienced that some of them fall into three places amongst fans.

- You love it from start to finish and it's just bloody great for you.
- You like parts and enjoy it, but not as a whole.
- You feel a bit anti-climatic about it and feel a bit let down.

Sometimes there is no middle ground. This appears, based on members here reviews, to be the case with Quantum of Solace.

Now, that being stated....

BLOODY WELL DONE AND I LOVED IT!

It worked for me. For those that it didn't, that's fine and the last thing I want to do is imply that those that are on the other side of the fence are too Thick or just didn't "get it" etc. That's not cool. Everyone has their own take.

So, on we go.

I felt this was the perfect fourth and fifth act to follow up with Casino Royale.

In a way, I'll "reverse engineer" my take on it.

The ending gunbarrel: Quick, great punctuation to the film and telling us all that THIS Bond is going to be back and become the 007 we all know and love now that he's found his "solace".

The final bit in Russia is smooth and Craig, PPK in hand, with that pose and stare is JAMES :(ING BOND. The last bit with M and "I never left" followed by his dropping of Vespers necklace in the snow is lovely and - no kidding (for me) - almost left me a little misty eyed. Much like Vesper's death. It's done. She's gone from his life...and life goes on. It will for him.

Final battle in the desert hotel - Great action piece. Camille and Bond make a strong duo and and her battle with the general vs. Bond and Greene having at it cross cut amidst the fire and mayhem was impressive. How Dan and Olga pulled that off without getting turned extra crispy for real is beyond me. Their escape is wonderful, but also intense with the notion that rather than be burned alive, their both willing to go out and her leaving it in Bond's hands. "Make it quick."

Dumping Greene in the desert. - Brilliant. Also, leaving him with a can of oil - payback for Fields - gave a great moment of "Yeah...You earned that you bastard".

The parting between Bond and Camille was well done as she's very much left with the same emotion as Bond had at the end of Casino Royale. The quick kiss and then she's gone.

Bond cut off from MI6 - Well, we've seen it before. The death of Fields (loved the Goldfinger homage) as she is covered in what has been called "black gold". :) Bond's escape and fight in the elevator was wonderfully brutal and fast. I love his sharp, fast stroll across the hotels atrium and then running into M. The fact that M ackowledges that he's on to something is great. We finally see she's taking a bit of a shine to this rough around the edges Double-O as he is a fine operative and has great instincts.

Bolivia - Beautiful locale. The fundraising party is great and Camille is gorgeous. The iconic shot of her and Bond in the desert evokes memories of "The Spy Who Loved Me" and the air battle is well done. I loved the free-fall sequence. Again, quick but well done.

Fields - Simply adorable IMO. She's great and the fact that she's terribly ashamed of her action and being seduced by Bond slightly reminds one of Patricia Fearing in Thunderball. Of course, the funny part being that after she confesses her guilt, they both jump right back into bed.

Mathis - The talk at his villa is very much what was left out of Casino Royale from the novel where they both discuss the nature of their work and good and evil. Again a nice nod to the book this all sprang from.

The arrival in Bolivia is some of the best humour to be had.

Fields: I'm to put you on a plane back to London.

Bond: Does that include my friend Mathis?

Fields: I'm sorry, I don't know you.

Bond: You see that, you're gone a little while and already forgotten.

Mathis: You only say that to be cruel.

Laughed my butt off on that one.

Now, sadly, Mathis' death. That's a heartbreaker. The fact that Bond - this rough, heartless bastard, takes the time to hold a dying friend and offer some small talk is actually pretty touching. Sorry to see him go. Liked having him around.

Felix - His bits in the background are great and his meeting with Bond in the bar are something straight out of what I remember from Fleming. Direct, on the job, and you sense a great deal of respect and trust between the two. I would hope to see more of them working together in the future. Wright has really made his incarnation of Felix his own.

The opera - Hitchcotchian indeed. Reminded me of North By Northwest and the auction. The final action was good. Once Bond made his presence known (wonderfully done - "Can I say something?" ) the effect of "roaches scattering once the lights have been turned on on" makes it work and now Bond has a few of the faces of Quantum. Cool set and mysterious tone. Bond lifting a tux and a Quantum gift bag is simple yet stylish.

Boat chase - Well done again. For all the Steve McQueen nods Craig has gotten, the motorcycle bits are going to haunt him for years to come....But in a good way. The chase was electrifying and having Dan and Olga right in the middle of it really sold it. Hat's off to the second unit.

Rooftop Chase - A betrayal. An inside man. The gallery rope bits. WOW! Well staged and done and frenetic energy. Ending with the last desperate bit of who can get to their gun first and that amazing shot of Craig swinging about and bringing up the PPK. ROCK ON!

Mister White - Creepy, wounded and menacing. Also, the single Quantum member (that we know of) to not scatter during the opera. We'll be seeing him again.

The car chase - Full throtle and full tilt! Great, great, great kick off. Intense and in your face. Although I have to wonder if MI6 will be issuing 007 yet another Aston Martin. He doesn't seem to be able to keep them in "pristine condition" once he gets behind the wheel. :)

Side notes: Opening credits and overall score - Say what you will about the song, but it wasn't half bad and the score and hints of the Bond theme were well placed and just added to the mix.

Well, there you have it. Agree, disagree, whatever....

But that's my take. As I finish typing this up, I'm debating catching another showing just by myself later tonight.

As for opening night, my evening ended up well with 00-7 of us decking ourselves out and dining at my favorite local Italian restaurant in the company of two good chaps and four lovely ladies.

Bond was back....and he will be again.

Cheers all.

From Los Angeles with love,

Bryce (003)

Bryce: How long have I got?

Kristian: *sips espresso* Barely enough to buy yourself popcorn.

Bryce: Well that doesn't give us much time does it?

Kristian: Bryce...Move your ass.

Remember, I'm a Seattle born and bred boy. Thanks for the kind and mutual praise.

Now, you move YOUR ass and do the same. Maybe I'll buy you some steamed clams at Ray's someday. :)

Just printed out my ticket for a 10:30pm showing.

Cheers Loomis my friend...I did it just to get extra points with the Admiral since I have a habit of shooting people first and cameras second. :(

Took in a second screening last night.

Yup, feel the same about it.

A few issues I didn't address before.

All the Bond & M scenes - Sharp, solid and well done. Judi Dench ('scruse me Maam.) DAME Judi is amazing. Love the opening bit with White.

Knife fight: First rule of knife fighting: You're going to get cut. Excellent bit and just as fast and hard as such confrontations can be. Don't ask how I know.

It was fun the second time around. Looking forward to my third.

Carry on.

Now, not to be all that wise, but as a moderator around these parts, let me say this for what I've read on the boards.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Some of the attacks against those who have not enjoyed QoS as I did and those that have are pointless.

You don't like it. Fine.

You love it. Fine.

No need to be nasty.

Now, go see QoS again or don't. State your thoughts by all means.

Play nice kids because I'm getting tired of the seemingly endless "report this post to a moderator" emails I've been getting.

I'd rather be drinking Vespers in the arms of a beautiful lady or seeing QoS again.

Both of which I'm strongly considering this evening. :)

Excellent debrief on the mission Bryce (003). The frenetic energy and tough brutality could come from a version of one of your missions, Bryce (003). I could well imagine one your excellent reports being filmed in this style. Only, you'd add your own unique brand of class, style and sophistication to make the adventure your inimitable own.

Generally speaking, I was definitely happy with the movie, as was Moffet, but also had some issues with it. I disagree with you on the theme song, whch I thought was completely forgettable. As evidence I offer the fact that I have completely forgotten it already. I liked the use of music, but missed hearing the Bond theme now and then. I agree that the opera sequence was great. I disagree on the boat chase. There specifically I felt the editing really detracted from the sequence. I don't mind the fast, choppy and, for lack of a better word, "Bourneian" editing for hand-to-hand combat, but for the boat chase I found it horrible. Part of the fun of a Bond chase sequence is seeing how Bond thinks his way out of pursuit. The way that chase was cut I never had a good sense of where everyone was in relation to each other, and if I couldn't figure that out who's to say the director did either? It feels like a copout to me. There was a similar moment when White is escaping. Jeremy thought M was shot while I didn't. That's a major dramatic point and if two filmicly educated types like Jeremy and I have opposite takes on something like that, it's a failure on the part of the filmmakers. Finally, what the hell was up with Felix's superior? It was a horrible caricature and completely out of tone from almost everything else in the movie. It felt like something from the era of "Live and Let Die," at best. It reminded me of Philip Seymour Hoffman's character from "Charlie Wilson's War," except without any of the substance that Hoffman brings to everything he does. I liked Olga's character and was glad she got to make her kill. I was less enamored with Gemma, who I thought was underdeveloped as a character. I didn't feel the chemistry that allowed her to fall into bed with Bond the first time they are alone in room together. I did appreciate the Goldfinger homage, but haven't decided if I think it was out of character for the bad guys, who had not really done anything like that before.

All that said, I'm planning to see it again this weekend.

And aside from your current Bond high, how the hell are you?

Heh-heh-heh...Your company is greatly missed. :)

Cheers good sir. Lava (aka: Miss GoLightly) asked about you the other day. She's quite well.

Well, we'll have to see what happens after my much delayed fan-fic goes up. Just been writing the acknowledgement for the piece. Maybe Michael and Barbara will come to me begging "Please, please, please mister Axworthy can we please have the rights to film 'None Shall Regret'?"

Another friend of mine did offer an idea to actually design opening credits for me and came up with a song or two.

Now, get thee back to the cinema for another viewing of QoS. :)

Thanks for that Bryce, I enjoyed reading the review, looking at the various elements, I can't say I was head over heels about QOS, I just found it pretty good. Would you make it your number one 007 film (I got it that you loved it though loud and clear) or is it too early to tell ?
I agree with some of the strong images/themes/messages in QOS though. Some people have a problem with the demise of Mathis and how he was left, but it seems to fit with CraigBond for me and how he is learning, but it is(at least on the surface) a very cold thing to do.
Good stuff :(

It wasn't an easy task. But I did appreciate the view. Not the gents - Although fine chaps they are - but I preferred the "perfectly rounded" figures. :(

I must add that today I took in my third screening with Miss Lava Sterling (her first) and I enjoyed it even more. She was quite taken with it and it worked for her. She enjoyed several bits and - being the smart cookie she is - had Quantum's plot figured out very quickly "They're after water, not oil."

Clever girl, but then again, she is very well read. :)

Bond cut off from MI6 - Well, we've seen it before. The death of Fields (loved the Goldfinger homage) as she is covered in what has been called "black gold". :( Bond's escape and fight in the elevator was wonderfully brutal and fast. I love his sharp, fast stroll across the hotels atrium and then running into M. The fact that M ackowledges that he's on to something is great. We finally see she's taking a bit of a shine to this rough around the edges Double-O as he is a fine operative and has great instincts.

Both of Craig's Bond films have "chills down my spine" moments. For me, that moment in "Casino Royale" came with "Yes . . . considerably." That's when I went from seeing Craig as Bond to simply seeing the character, James Bond. That same moment happens during this scene, as Bond is getting on the elevator with the MI6 agents, and we hear thrilling strains of the Bond theme rising in the background (but not overpowering the scene). After he incapacitates them, takes the gun, gets off the elevator and meets M, my heart does a little leap when he nimbly hops over the railing and scampers across, cat-like, then hops over the other railing. I try to imagine Brosnan pulling that off even half so deftly. Nope, can't see it.

And the knife fight? The only other Bond actor I can see nailing that the way Craig did was Connery. "Quantum" is full of little moments like these, but those are two that immediately come to mind for me, where Craig inhabits the role so completely that I am utterly convinced he is every bit the Bond we're told he is.

Granted, the stiff-legged Brosnan might not have pulled it off as deftly, but absent a self-satisified re-adjustment of the tie, the scene seems like standard issue Brosnan-era silliness to me. Taking out every agent in the elevator is a bit much -especially for the hardboiled gritty world Craig's Bond is supposed to inhabit.
