QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5:

How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?:
1

Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?:
About the same

Most memorable moment:
Mathis' death

Which part of the film did you enjoy most?:
Siena chase

Which part of the film interested you least?:
Plane fight

What surprised you most about the film?:
Easiness of beating the villains in the end

Most amusing scene in the film:
Siena chase

Most "Fleming" bit in the film:
Mathis' death

The film's biggest strengths:
Craig's performance, action sequences, sets

The film's greatest flaws:
Too political, not escapistic enough, too fast, too short, insufficient use of good ideas, weak women's characters. Disgusting song and bad soundtrack

Additional comments:
I don't want to see another film with Bond's character being evolved to what we know and love. I want to see him being that person. Enough with psychology. Even though I liked Craig's performance, the REAL challenge for a Bond actor is when he has to be Bond, not Bond in the making. I believe Craig can pull it off, but have yet to see it.

Interesting. I've had the same thought.

-----------------------------------------------------

Favourite Bond film: CASINO ROYALE

Least favourite Bond film: A VIEW TO A KILL

QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5: Just under 4.

How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?: Once.

Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?: About the same.

Most memorable moment: Mathis' death and the opera sequence.

Which part of the film did you enjoy most?: Either of the above, plus the Siena rooftop chase and the final conclusion with Yusef.

Which part of the film interested you least?: Possibly the Perla de las Dunas finale - it felt like something was missing. Alternatively, the initial car chase where I could barely see what was going on.

What surprised you most about the film?: The humour, and the attractive unique location cards created by MK12.

Most amusing scene in the film: Several. Bond changing hotels in Bolivia was one of my particular favourites.

Most "Fleming" bit in the film: Bond's meeting with Mathis at his villa, or Bond doing some genuine spying in Haiti and at the opera in Bregenz.

The film's biggest strengths: Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Giancarlo Giannini, beautiful locations and cinematography.

The film's greatest flaws: Pacing, some of the fast-paced editing seemed overdone, a few unnecessary action scenes, and Gemma Arterton's "oh my gosh"...

Favourite Bond film: THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN. Now and forever.
Best Bond film (if different to your fave - you may, of course, cite QUANTUM OF SOLACE): CASINO ROYALE.
Least favourite Bond film: THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH
QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5: 4.
How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?: Once.
Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?: Better than I expected. Yes, considerably. Given the recent griping, I'd suspected I'd write a review entitled QUANTUM OF SUCKAGE. Alas, I'll have to pass on using that zinger.
Most memorable moment: I'm very partial to the PTS. It's just so balls-to-the-wall. I know that that implies that it's all downhill from the start, but this film is full of very good things.
Which part of the film did you enjoy most?: See above. That and the opening credits animation. That feeling of "Bond is back and I've just started watching the new film and OMG it's really good!" just can't be beat.
Which part of the film interested you least?: The dogfight and freefall. Fundamentally Brosnanesque and not even very exciting. Doesn't belong in this by and large wonderfully gritty and Craigian outing.
What surprised you most about the film?: Just how hard-edged it feels at times and just how hard-edged Bond feels as a character. Beyond, say, LICENCE TO KILL or CASINO ROYALE, and beyond even the mighty Bourne.
Most amusing scene in the film: Well, this may be something I've misinterpreted, but it seemed to me that when Bond knocked on Mathis' door he (and I'm gonna put this in spoiler tags 'coz it's a really lovely joke)
Spoiler
Class.
Most "Fleming" bit in the film: Bond's visit to Mathis' villa.
The film's biggest strengths: Incredible visual flair, generally hard-edged flavour and risk-taking feel (albeit that it feels rather more risk-taking than it actually is), some stunning action scenes, and fine performances by all and sundry.
The film's greatest flaws: Two action scenes too many (the Haiti boat business and the dogfight/freefall) - they're not all that great to look at, add nothing to the story and undercut its gritty tone. M's willingness to - apparently - shadow Bond's every globetrotting step seems less than believable, as does her ability to do so (although the British secret service has never been portrayed as more hi-tech, so perhaps they've developed superfast planes or teleportation or something). The final scene is needlessly BOURNE SUPREMACY (come on, it is) and also falls pretty flat. Now I see why it was felt necessary to cap it with the gunbarrel (a great ":( yeah!" moment), and it ain't only because of the supposed completion of Bond's "character arc".
Additional comments: Flawed but great fun, with Craig on awesome form. A solid and surprising Bond flick, all told, with some flashes of greatness. If Forster comes back for BOND 23 (doubt he will, though), you'll hear not a murmur of complaint from me.

Least favourite Bond film: GE

QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5: 5

How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?: Twice

Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?: My initial expectations were met though the negative reviews had got me worried.

Most memorable moment: The Opera sequence and M confronting Bond at the hotel in Bolivia.

Which part of the film did you enjoy most?: Eco-Hotel section at the end.

Which part of the film interested you least?: Agent Fields - poor performance by (admitedly hot!) actress but not big enough of a role to effect film overall.

What surprised you most about the film?: That the negative reviews in no way reflected the film I actually saw.

Most amusing scene in the film: Bond's dead-pan "Don't bleed to death" to Mr. White near the start.

Most "Fleming" bit in the film: Bond calmly waiting for Slate to die after their fight. Also the late-night scene between Bond and Mathis on the plane.

The film's biggest strengths: Daniel Craig & Mark Forster.

The film's greatest flaws: Being simply too good for popular consumption.

Additional comments: Brilliant film. Much like it's leading man: - Lean, muscular, dangerous and cool as FU**!!! :(

Most memorable moment: Bond revealing himself during the Tosca scene

Which part of the film did you enjoy most?: Escape from the Hotel. Vintage Bond moment!!

Which part of the film interested you least?: Pre-title sequence – (Sorry, but was a total blur for the most part)

Favourite Bond film:
The Spy Who Loved Me.

Best Bond film:
From Russia With Love

Least favourite Bond film:
Die Another Day

QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5:
3.5

How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?:
1

Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?:
About the same

Most memorable moment:
Opera Scene

Which part of the film did you enjoy most?:
See above Opera scene, special mention to the Aerial Dogfight

Which part of the film interested you least?:
Boat Chase

What surprised you most about the film?:
The speed and fast cutting and pace of the film.

Most amusing scene in the film:
Initial meeting with Fields

Most "Fleming" bit in the film:
Bonds first meeting with Mathis and Mathis quoting a few lines from "The Nature of Evil" from the CR novel.

The film's biggest strengths:

Visual Style
Locations
Acting Performances(Mathis, Felix, Greene, Camille, M)
Good contemporary feel, adding some political elements to the plot.
Lots of themes introduced to the story, theme of Trust, theme of Bond finding peace.
Camille and the fact it was a different relationship to normal.
More realistic and intense action scenes.
Some events are presented in parallel and this is effective in some sequences
Daniel Craig is superb
Overall quality of film up to a high standard, as is expected.
Some genuinely moving emotional scenes.

The film's greatest flaws:
Action too fast and the viewer is too close to the action.
Editing too fast
Action scenes do not stand out. Some need some to have originality and be as audacious as CR.
Bionic Bond - Would like to have some of the vulnerability carried over from CR.
Plot feels rushed and unfinished, feels short in duration.
Dialogue not up to CR standard
Not as much humour as CR.
Gunbarrel placement.

Additional comments:
Pretty enjoyable, and well worth a few viewings.

Great thread.

Favourite Bond film: On Her Majesty's Secret Service

Best Bond film: From Russia With Love

Least favourite Bond film: Die Another Day

QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5: 4 1/2

How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?: 1

Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?: Better

Most memorable moment: Opera showdown

Which part of the film did you enjoy most?: Bregenz Opera

Which part of the film interested you least?: Opening titles

What surprised you most about the film?: Faithfulness to classic Bond movies

Most amusing scene in the film: Bond meeting Camille

Most "Fleming" bit in the film: Bond drunk

The film's biggest strengths: Craig; superb production qualities; extremely stylish direction; everyone in it.

The film's greatest flaws: title song; fifteen more, and relatively quiet, minutes to make sure that everyone, even republicans, are happy.

Additional comments: May be the shortest, but it's jam packed with goodness. Music was good, and sometimes excellent, but suffers from the pointless insertion of an unrelated song when D Arnold should be scoring whole shebang. Still, it's pretty good stuff.

I´ll write up a proper review latter, now my eyes are really telling me not to look into my computer as I have seen QOS two times in a row just now.

Favourite Bond film:From Russia With Love
Best Bond film (if different to your fave - you may, of course, cite QUANTUM OF SOLACE):From Russia With Love
Least favourite Bond film:Die Another Day
QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5:maybe a round 4
How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?:2
Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?:same
Most memorable moment:so many...Just pick one of the Bond/Mathis moments.
Which part of the film did you enjoy most?:every second of it
Which part of the film interested you least?:none
What surprised you most about the film?:nothing, I followed this production from day 1
Most amusing scene in the film:Mathis telling the Taxi driver to shut up. I reminded me of the famous Chavez moment.
Most "Fleming" bit in the film:Bond/Mathis, Bond/Felix
The film's biggest strengths:It´s a mean, lean, very stylish novella.
The film's greatest flaws:Maybe it lacks those things you really can have just once in a while like the caviar orders or the DB5, but really, if they keep on showing us the same things over and over again, they´ll be on a rut. And the editing was a bit frenetic as some have said but it bothered me less on my second viewing.
Additional comments:I liked the film on my first viewing and loved it on my second. That opening shot of the lake was gorgeous and so is the rest of the film.
I´ll write a proper review soon. It´ll be nice to watch CR and QOS in a row when the DVD comes out. All and all, very good fun and a proper entry in the Bond canon. :(

The film's biggest strengths: Definitely Daniel Craig's peformance

The film's greatest flaws: No gunbarrel at the beginning of the movie and the quick editing in the first half (the second half was better)

Additional comments: Good entertaiment, by far not the best Bondfilm, a bit dissapointing, but it has great moments and Daniel Craig is probably even better than he was in CR.

Best Bond film (if different to your fave - you may, of course, cite QUANTUM OF SOLACE): From Russia with Love

QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5: 4.5
How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?: 1 (2 now)
Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?: Better
Most memorable moment: Bond contemplating putting Camille down
Which part of the film did you enjoy most?: Mathis' demise
Which part of the film interested you least?: Air-borne
What surprised you most about the film?: The level of risk the production team has taken
Most amusing scene in the film: Bond butts in on Quantum discussion at the Opera
Most "Fleming" bit in the film: Tossing away of the Love Knot
The film's biggest strengths: Bond is not a killing machine. All the characters need to make choices that have real consequences.
The film's greatest flaws: Editing.
Additional comments: First time poster but long time lurker/fan of the books and movies. I feel so strongly about this movie that I cannot stop thinking about it since viewing it last week - I respect EON/Foster/Craig's courage to make a movie that demands a viewer's full attention and the level of literary/cinematic references that come through as enriching layers and not mere pastiche. Viewers who want a comforting, reassuring Bond will hate it, but for a life-long "wannabe Bond" this movie has clearly moved me.
****New comments after viewing the 2nd time:
The second time was even better, absolutely captivating and it is truly a "lean" film. I took my 70 something years old parents along (Sean was their guy) and they liked it and had no trouble following the plot.****

Best Bond film (if different to your fave - you may, of course, cite QUANTUM OF SOLACE): CASINO ROYALE

Least favourite Bond film: THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH

QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5: 4.5

How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?: 1

Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?: Better.

Most memorable moment: I have a few, like Mathis/Bond's good-bye, and Bond/Camille's scene in the burning eco-hotel and subsequent good-bye.

Which part of the film did you enjoy most?: The end section (Bond escaping from MI6 guard, then the assault on the eco-hotel, Bond's good-bye to Camille, and Bond's confrontation with Yusef).

Which part of the film interested you least?: Some of the action scenes (namely the opening car chase, the boat chase and the airplane sequence).

What surprised you most about the film?: How moved I was by its character development, and how well it resolved Bond's character arc from CASINO ROYALE.

Most amusing scene in the film: Bond tossing the can of oil at Greene and commenting that it might be twenty miles before he starts to drink it.

Most "Fleming" bit in the film: The scene at Mathis' villa.

The film's biggest strengths: Daniel Craig. A terrific sense of style and elegance. Some great, well-written scenes.

The film's greatest flaws: The pacing. QUANTUM is too padded out with action and should have been even more concise. Some elements could afford some more weight, too (ala Fields and Bond's time together).

Additional comments: A great Bond film, and one of the finer ones we've ever had. Not as good as CASINO ROYALE, mind you, but I'd have to go back to the 1960s to find some Bond films that I preferred.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5: 4

How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?: 1

Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?: First 20 minutes worse than I expected, the rest exceeded every expectation.

Most memorable moment: "Oil Fields", followed by Mathis' death

Which part of the film did you enjoy most?: the whole Bolivia sequence.

Which part of the film interested you least?: Siena

What surprised you most about the film?: the strangely unengaging action in the first half.

Most amusing scene in the film: Bolivia hotel lobby.

Most "Fleming" bit in the film: Bregenz

The film's biggest strengths: Daniel Craig IS James Bond, Mathis, cinematography, gunbarrel.

The film's greatest flaws: a musical disaster, damn subtitles, and too much M.

Additional comments: the final scene with Mr. White should have been in the movie, since the ending, as it is now, doesn't quite feel concluding.

I'd been eagerly awaiting your thoughts, Harmsmeister. I'm not surprised to find that our response to QUANTUM OF SOLACE is virtually identical. We agree that the film, far from being too short, is actually overlong, and it seems that you were also underwhelmed by the boat chase and airplane sequence.

Do you agree with me that the dogfight/freefall doesn't belong in this film?

Yes, I do. I don't care for it much at all. It's very mediocre, despite a lot of solid potential (and yes, the freefall feels like it came from some other Bond movie). Across the board, I have to say the action isn't really up to CASINO ROYALE's standard.

Favourite Bond film:
SPY WHO LOVED ME/THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS

Best Bond film (if different to your fave - you may, of course, cite QUANTUM OF SOLACE):
ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE

Least favourite Bond film:
DIE ANOTHER DAY

QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5:
4

How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?:
Once.

Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?:
Better than expected

Most memorable moment:
Bond and Camille marching through the desert/Greene dumped in the middle of the desert/Mathis in a skip/the double subtitle taxi scene.

Which part of the film did you enjoy most?:
Double subtitle taxi scene

Which part of the film interested you least?:
All of the action sequences.

What surprised you most about the film?:
It was really elegant and funny.

Most amusing scene in the film:
Mathis in a skip.

Most "Fleming" bit in the film:
The party scene.

The film's biggest strengths:
Overall tone, visual direction and soundscaping/design.

The film's greatest flaws:

Editing, action scenes and action design are uniformly awful (visual effects included), as are MK12's contributions. Lack of an opening gunbarrel lets it down, as does the (lack of) direction of the closing gunbarrel.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5: 4.8

How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?: 1

Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?: Infinitely better.

Most memorable moment: The opening shot of the film, all the Bond-Mathis scenes, and how Craig gets away from the Mi6 men

Which part of the film did you enjoy most?: The whole ending.

Which part of the film interested you least?: None that I can think of.

What surprised you most about the film?: How well it was directed, the action having that "wow" factor, and the characterization.

Most amusing scene in the film: When Bond changes Hotels.

Most "Fleming" bit in the film: Bond and Mathis at his villa.

The film's biggest strengths: Daniel Craig and the rest of the cast, great direction, and the subtle characterization

Additional comments: I enjoyed this more than when I first saw CR, and I think its right up their with the early Connery's and may be the best, I will just have wait and see how I feel after a couple more viewings.

Favourite Bond film: TSWLM (because it was the first I´ve seen)
Best Bond film (if different to your fave - you may, of course, cite QUANTUM OF SOLACE): QOS
Least favourite Bond film: NSNA
QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5: 5
How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?: 2 (but I´d love to see it again and again)
Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?: Better than I expected.
Most memorable moment: So many. Maybe this one: Bond just standing there and facing Quantum´s thugs after disrupting the conference during the opera. A scene which totally captured Bond´s courage and arrogance with wit and pathos. Even more wonderful because of Forster´s decision to tone down the sound and going into this great montage between Bond being chased through the restaurant and "Tosca" on the stage.
Which part of the film did you enjoy most?: The opera sequence.
Which part of the film interested you least?: The end credits. What surprised you most about the film?: How the visual style was not MTV but a totally elegant, precise and interestingly elliptic way of telling this story.
Most amusing scene in the film: "We´re teachers on a sabbatical. And we have just won the lottery." / "May I make a suggestion?"
Most "Fleming" bit in the film: The opera sequence.
The film's biggest strengths: The visual style, the humor, the writing, Daniel Craig.
The film's greatest flaws: It was so good that I´m disappointed that we will probably have to wait three years for the next Bond.Additional comments: Like any trend-setting breakthrough people will hate it for being so different while not seeing how typically and traditionally Bondian it really is.

Favourite Bond film: OHMSS

Least favourite Bond film: Any Bond film is a good one--rather have one than not.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5: 4 1/2

How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?: 1

Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?: Much better

Most memorable moment: The ending, in the snow, the darkness of the night--the necklace. And Craig just sells that whole ending.

Which part of the film did you enjoy most?: I think the plot was pretty darn good.

Which part of the film interested you least?: The Opening car chase

What surprised you most about the film?: How it dispensed with so many of the EON cliches and I still loved the film!

Most amusing scene in the film: Either Bond pulling up in the Aston with no door or Leiter taking the swig of beer while the world is falling apart around him.

Most "Fleming" bit in the film: Camille's story.

The film's biggest strengths: Craig, the cast, the characters have depth

The film's greatest flaws: The editing was terrible. Wasn't thrilled with the place name titles--found it distracting.

Additional comments: Keep em coming, Daniel Craig!

Favourite Bond film: The Spy That Loves Me

Best Bond film (if different to your fave - you may, of course, cite QUANTUM OF SOLACE): Why again you ask? The Spy That Loves Me

Least favourite Bond film: Cossino Royal/Quantom Of Solace - both bad, not really Bond films. I have sorry for this but is what I have think.

QUANTUM OF SOLACE rating out of 5: 0.07

How many times have you seen QUANTUM OF SOLACE?: 1

Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?: Well, I don't like Dancial Craig but the worse als I expected.

Most memorable moment: Joke of lottery winnings

Which part of the film did you enjoy most?: Kissing Agent Fielding.

Which part of the film interested you least?: Car chase, titles, music, action, story - the all of this.

What surprised you most about the film?: How speed the cutting was is! Zo fast, no?

Most amusing scene in the film: The hotel lottery winnings scene - so funny.

Most "Fleming" bit in the film: I have not read much of the books but say the bit where Bond is in the plane getting drunk. This is straight from the novel.

The film's biggest strengths: Well, I like the action in Sienna. And parachute jump.

The film's greatest flaws: Dancial Craig - he is a thug Bond, no klass, no Bond theme, no gunbarrel at the beginning, no descent title song (why ken they not get back to Shirley Bassey - she could so such god job), no Moneypenny, Q, gadgets, humour - just some Roger Moore humour, please. At the end, Bond is not doing the girl Camille. He should be and then caught by M! This would have humour, no?

Additional comments: Bond must be Bond in movies. Not other thing - so Bourne. This is no of right. Is is wrong so for to ask for Bond to be the back? I agree with this person here -

Most amusing scene in the film: Teachers on sabatical etc.

Most "Fleming" bit in the film: Bond and Mathis on the plane.

The film's biggest strengths: Daniel Craig and the other main actors.

The film's greatest flaws: Terrible choppy editing on action sequences and slight style over substance feel.

Favourite Bond Film: FRWL / Goldfinger

Least Favourite Bond Film: A View to a Kill, only b/c Roger is so visibly old

QOS Rating out of 5: 4

How Many Times Have You Seen QOS? 1

Was QUANTUM OF SOLACE better than you expected, worse than you expected, or about the same as you expected?: Worse than I would have expected immediately after seeing CR for the first time, but quite a bit better than I expected after all the reviews started coming in.

Most memorable moment: Opera sequence. Classic Bond.

Which part of the film did you enjoy most?: From meeting Mathis to the start of the party in Bolivia. There is no quality/aesthetic gap between this and any material in the near-perfect Casino Royale.

Which part of the film interested you least?: Plane chase. Only because - despite being beautifully shot, the sequence had very little in terms of narrative "content" and design.

What surprised you most about the film?: How much the aesthetic was nailed, how much it feels like a classic Connery Bond (albeit on steroids), and how much a few bad editing choices have managed to muddle that and ruin the film for some.

Most amusing scene in the film: "Oil fields" sequence. Again, classic Bond.

Most "Fleming" bit in the film: Any Bond/M dialogue or Bond/Mathis dialogue. Yusef confrontation. One of those.

The film's biggest strengths: Daniel Craig, production design, pace, score.

The film's greatest flaws: Moments of genius editing are overshadowed by moments of atrocious editing, which I think is largely overshadowing so MUCH of the rest of the film itself that it's ruining peoples' experiences. A "quantum of classical convention" in this area would have saved a good 10-15% on the Tomato-meter, I think.

Additional comments: Not the Best Bond ever, but certainly not the atrocity that some are citing it is. Perfectly above average with a slew of redeeming qualities (and even classic moments) that are overshadowed by a mere handful of bad editing choices in an effort to "contemporize" the series.

Expect Bond 23 to be more classical in many departments. History will be kinder to this film in the "big picture" view of the franchise than the reviews will be specifically, here and now.
