[quote name='Mister Asterix' date='2 September 2005 - 16:09'][quote name='return of the saint' date='2 September 2005 - 11:13']2) How does this affect the credits of the film?

At this point the credits are pretty simple. I believe it will read:

Neal Purvis & Robert Wade
and
Paul Haggis

Or Paul Haggis could be credited as "Creative Consultant"...

Remember that Tom Manckiewicz pretty much wrote the entire screenplay for the 1978 SUPERMAN movie, but ended up only getting a "Creative Consultant" credit because of the writers guild.

Or maybe it could be "written by Paul Haggis, story by Roberto Fade and Knee in the Pelvis"?.

Maybe Haggis was brought in to rewrite the script for a more serious actor, maybe Daniel Craig, as we're learning today that he's supposedly under serious consideration again for the role.

To bring in a new screenwriter to polish a script us is quite a seriouse thing. It could be change in location (South Africa???) or caracter. They might have even decided to rewrite 'The Men In Straw hats' due to recent terror atttacks.

I think depending how much gets reworked and how different it is, P&W might get a "screenstory" credit.

I'm more inclined to believe they brought him in because the film will be more drama than action, and if you want someone to give it a good fix-er-up, you might as well hire a guy like Haggis to do it. Besides being the co-creator of Walker, Texas Ranger, the man really has no experience with action. Look at his past films and TV shows. It's pretty bare, in that respect.

If Casino Royale really is a straight forward adaptation of the novel, then this most likely is the reason for his hiring. I think so anyway. I don't think it has anything to do with actors or whatever.

I hate this reboot crap.  It's very depressing.  Hell, even the film Dr. No wasn't Bonds first mission. :)

I agree.

If they are truly doing a "re-boot" of the series, I think we will soon see an end of the Bond series. :)

This rookie Bond idea is terrible! They should bring back Pierce Brosnan, or at the very least get a Hugh Jackman or Clive Owen, not some 22 year old kid!

It's amazing that CBners still manage to say this with a straight face. What's the point of being so ridiculously melodramatic? It would take a lot more than a reboot to sink this franchise.

I agree Pussfeller. Its actually rather funny watching people make these preposterous claims...I am guessing they are the same people who were saying in the late 1960s that the Bond franchise would be dead without Sean Connery in the lead role.

Having the '&' and the 'and' is very clumsy. It should read: Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Paul Haggis. In regards to Haggis coming in to concentrate on 'drama' this is a Bond film! no drama allowed. If you have drama you don't have an audience. We all know this from the past mistakes. Also it will be up to Campbell to concentrate on the action not the writer as usually those action sequences are only roughly described on page.

Yup, they sure do. Usually, the first writer(s) attached have a very good position and despite the changes wrought, will almost always be given the first credit. A polish/redraft/second pass has often gone uncredited on Bonds (although sometimes writers do not want credit - makes them look like hacks), to wit:

Len Deighton - FRWL
Tom Mankiewicz - MR

Apparently Deighton was the first screenwriter on FRWL. According to Richard Maibaum Deighton's script wasn't going anywhere so the producers brought Maibaum back.

Mankiewicz did an early treatment for MR but apparently none of his work found its way into Wood's script.
