In the beginning scenes of FYEO - we finally see Moore's scene for paying homage to Tracey.

But why did they do this for this film? I started thinking that there was talk of Moore leaving after MR - and so it might be easier inserting a new Bond reflecting on his dear, departed Tracey for the opening of FYEO. It was definitely a scene that any "new" Bond could handle...

What do you think?

Moore leaving was what I always understood to be the reason for having the Tracy's grave scene. It confirms the series' continuity despite the fact a new actor would be playing Bond. After Moore decided to play the role again, they just left the scene.

That was the general feel in 1981 . There were media reports that he would leave . And just before film of "FYEO" Broccoli talked him in to coming back . Either way it's a nicly done scene . Remember Moore has more of a conection to Tracy . Ironically than Connery . Even through Diamonds Are Forever came after On Her Majesty Secret Service . In The Spy Who Loved Me Bond's marriage is mentioned by Agent XXX in the casino in Egypt . Plus it help tied-up the loose ends of the Blofeld ordeal . For both Bond and Broccoli .

I agree with the latter of KevinRichardson's remarks...more than Connery, Moore made a direct reference to Tracy in TSWLM.

Also, one of the secondary plots of FYEO was about avenging a loved one, and what it does to people. We saw that older and wiser Bond advising Melina that revenge gets you nowhere you want to be. Bond learned that lesson going after Blofeld and never quite being rid of the literal and metaphorical demon.

When Bond looks at that tombstone, he does so with a look of "What was I thinking?" It's not that he didn't love Tracy -- he did and does -- but he also came to realize that no matter whom he loved, she would be taken from him. Such is the nature of his job.

Micheal G. Wilson confirms this in the audio commentary for FYEO on the DVD.

And you've got to hand it, Roger Moore played those scenes like a master. His remark when the he's told there's an emergency at the office of, "It usually is," is both touching and sums up the life and inevitable fate of the character. The theme of revenge throughout FYEO makes it the perfect follow up to OHMSS. In fact, one should try watching the following Bond films in this order: OHMSS, FYEO, LTK, and TWINE. Their themes and plotlines connect and parallel each other rather beautifully.

That's a good connection you spotted, I thought about how a older, wiser Bond was giving this life lesson to Melina after he just disposed of Blofeld.

Moore's reaction to XXX's wife questions in TSWLM is quite good. Bond is indeed sensitive of the loss of Tracy.

Priest: "It's an emergency!"
Bond" "It usually is."

On a lighter side, anyone remember the MAD satire of FYEO? IT was called "For Her Thighs Only", and in their satire - Moore is leaving flowers not for Tracy, but rather for Sean Connery - pretty funny!

Hello GoldenGUN!

Sorry about that...I thought there was a GG around here.

If you can scan that one photo of Roger leaving flowers for Sean, that would be great.

It sounds like a good parody -- especially given the time of FYEO, with Moore coming off the most successful 007 movie (not adjusted for inflation) up until that time with Moonraker.
