It's quite assinine to rate a movie before you see it.

Anyway, here is my ranking of the Connery-era films.

1) Thunderball
2) From Russia With Love
3) Dr. No
4) Goldfinger
5) Never Say Never Again
6) You Only Live Twice
7) Diamonds are Forever

1. FRWL (only slightly better than TB)
2. TB
3. Dr. No
4. GF
5. YOLT
6. NSNA (it's actually pretty good despite the differences from the official series- great villain; great Blofeld; great Domino!)
7. DAF

I would have to disagree with you Righty007. I don't think it's fair to rate a movie you haven't even seen. Besides, we all know that EON has made its share of stinkers over the past 40 years. Personally speaking I think Never Say Never Again is the best of the Sean Connery James Bond movies, precisely because of its unique-ness.
It has a great villain, a wonderful Bond girl a deliciously over the top femme fatale, Rowan Atkinson as the stuffy Small Fawcett, and who cannot love the terrific Bernie Casey as Felix Leiter. I even think Sean Connery looks better than he did 12 years earlier in DAF, just witness the opening scene where he battles the terrorists/guerillas, he even head-butts one of them.

I agree with most of your praises of the film. I do, however, dislike Kim Basinger as Domino Petachi, but I think all of your other comments are dead-on. Sean was in great shape - and when he was taking down the terrorists in the opening scene and fighting the henchman at Shrublands, you really believed that he was in good enough shape to throw those punches and eventually win against them.

From Russia With Love -Best story of all of them and terrific Villian
Dr. No-one of the best villains, and great use of Caribbean locale
You Only Live Twice-great use of Japanese location, 1st half of plot interesting
Thunderball-again, good location, one of the best Bond women
Never Say Never Again-Good to see Connery back, good cast, terrible score
Goldfinger-I know I'm in the minority but apart from a couple of great scenes this film doesn't do much for me. Not enough action, pace or sense of danger (except for the laser scene). Bond spends too much time imprisoned
Diamonds Are Forever-worst Eon Bond film, foppish Blofeld, fat Connery, all the factors that made OHMSS so compelling are completely absent

"I'm afraid you caught me with more than my hands up."

1. Goldfinger - i know its a cliche, but everything just gels so well. the car, the baddie, gold, miami and Pooseh
2. From Russia With Love - near-perfect, just a little heavy in places
3. Thunderball - yes its boring as hell and the girl cant act, but its a spectacular EPIC and she was hot
4. Dr No - Good pace, Honey Ryder and Dr No was a top villain
5. You Only Live Twice - plus: the volcano, Pleasance's Blofeld, gorgeous cinematography. minus: so-so girls (Helga is Fiona re-hash, Kissy is a little dull but Aki has spunk), Hans and that silly rooftop fight (looks like a poorly staged ballet with punches that miss their target by 1/2 metre)
6. Never Say Never Again - sure its badly plotted (what point do the Nassau scenes serve except proving Fatima is bad), Connery is laughably old (which the script does a good job of playing up) and "Kim Basinger displayed more personality in the pages of Playboy" (i read that somewhere), but the acting (with the exception of our Oscar-winning Domino) is sublime and...umm....well thats it. NSNA is, though, a better film than...
7. Diamonds Are Forever. This abominable trash should have never reached the screen. A bloated Connery forced to deal with Jill St. John *shudders*, the worst car chase in the series - if not in all action films (and no the blooper in the alley doesnt make up for it), villains who display the same amount of menace as Katie Couric and "that indeterminable thing on the oil rig" - Richard Maibaum. There are only 2 things that make this film watchable, both care of Tiffany (who some writers have suggested has "a bra size larger than her IQ"):
(i) when she fires the machine gun and the recoil pushes her off the edge of the oil rig; and
(ii) her brilliant line when she wins at the water balloons: "blow up your pants"
She is one classy broad. In one dismal film. Ugh.

GF-9.8/10: The perfect Bond film and easily Connery's best.

TB-9/10: Underwater scenes are a little too long, but still a great thrill ride.

FRWL-9/10: The best pure spy thriller of the series.

YOLT-8/10: Nice locations but feels tired and flabby, and not just Connery's performance.

DN-8/10: I can't go any higher than this for one reason. I think that if the first film in a series was the best, there would be no reason to continue. That being said, this is an excellent movie with good performances and a great story.

DAF-7/10: The first hour is great, almost classic Bond. The next half hour has its moments but is rather dull and the film totally goes flatline in the last 30 minutes.

NSNA-7/10: I dislike the movie primarily because its little more than a remake of Thunderball, which is all that McClory could do. Connery is fine as usual, as are the villains but the backstory behind the film and McClory's subsequent shenanigans have really taken the fun out of the movie for me.

The whole plot was boring and all of the underwater sequences were slow and boring. The only good parts of the whole movie is the jet pack scene and the fight with the woman/man.
