Irish man Pierce playing Bond, it's acceptable.
Welsh born Dalton playing Bond, it's acceptable.

Because George Lazemby was Australian, he had kinda made it acceptable we could have a aussie actor like Hugh Jackmen as Bond.

Aussie actors can pass as British more I guess?

But what do most of you think, when Adam West-Batman tv series which was huge in 60s, Cubby offered him to play James Bond, and Adam West, like a good Bond fan, said Bond must be played by someone who is British, and declined, I thought he would make a good Bond , but he's amercian.

But while most of us Bond fans agree Bond must remain as British as possible, which means amercian actors must stay away more then Aussie actors, EON has offered amercian actors the role, can someone post a list of all Amercian actors who were considered or offered the role. Adam West was one.

So who's to know, it might not happen again? And one actor who might be a Amercian will accept regardless if he feels the actor should be British like Adam West said.

Well...John Gavin, an American, actually signed a contract to play Bond in DAF. We came very close.

Look I'm American through and through but I gotta tell you: James Bond must be an Englishman or someone from the UK. An American just won't cut it. Look at the Tomb Raider flicks, sure diverting fun and Angelina is great to look at, but I keep thinking through the flick; She's not a Brit, that's just an accent. Heck I do a fair British accent but I should never be considered to play the world's most celebrated gentlman secret agent.

James Bond 007 is British, having an American play him wouldn't work. There are many American actors that would be a great Bond, but having an accent is very important if you want to be Bond.

When I was watching one the Bond DVD's, in one of the special features, I think i heard that back in the 60's Terrence Young wanted Burt Reynolds to play Bond. But since Burt was American he didn't have a chance.

It wasn't Terrence Young - he had more sense. It was Guy Hamilton when they were casting for L&LD.

Michael Apted actually suggested Jason Patric for the part. After flipping through channels last night and giggling unmercilessly at Speed 2, I wonder what Apted was thinking? And Hamilton going for Burt as Bond? Jesus...any wonder I never was wild about Guy Hamilton's directing Bond.

The very first tv version of Casino Royale had an American as Jimmy Bond - secret agent, Felix was British and Peter Lorre was relatively ok as Le Chiffre. The result (no offence to our American cousins and allies): Sort of like getting Adam Sandler to play Hamlet (or any likeable character who is not predesposed to mindless violence/IQ over 50).

Michael Apted had to be on drug to suggest Jason Patric . "Casino Royale" the CBS TV verision with Barry Nelson as Card-shake Jimmy Bond was just a loose adpatation of the Fleming novel .Does not count. The Burt Reynold thing was just a example of the sickness that Guy Hamilton suffers from . It would have meant the death of the series . I am of the opinion that Bond should be played only by a Englishman , Scot , Irishman , Aussie . that's it.

It doesn't really matter. Look at the time period. It's at the end of the 60s and the "americanisation of Bond" period. Camp aspects, cheezy one liners and Connery playing it up in DAF in Vegas. Not likely to happen now. Bond always grosses over double the US take internationally anyway.

Bond always be played by an Englishman, I'm an American, but it would be horrible and unrealistic for someone like Mel Gibson to play James Bond. Wasn't he considered at one time or the other?

Come to think of it, if Burt played Bond in Live and Let Die, how weird would that have been with him and the redneck sherrif on the Bayou?

Burt did do a high speed boat chase through the Bayou in the movie Gator.

I am an American whom is against Bond being played by an American born actor. It just wouldn't be Bond if you had an American portraying him, IMO.

Well, I'm not totally against it. But if an American were a canditate, he'd have to be DAMN good. I'm an actor myself, well training to be one anyway. I don't plan on being like Jason Patric or whoever, I want to be more like Sir Ian Kellen or any other serious actor. Not all American are charmless buttheads. :)

What if someone where half-Irish. :)

EON flirted with the idea several times (most notably John Gavin & James Brolin), but in the end an Commonwealth actor was always chosen. But EON is going to have a difficult time to replace Brosnan. Now that Cubby is gone (who was a big supporter of the idea that Bond should always be played by an English), is it possible that an American actor will take over the role? Yes, but it's very very unlikely. The way I see it, Michael and Barbara will honor Cubby's wishes and hire a Commonwealth actor. Remember that Michael and Barbara only auditioned actors back in 94 who were either British, Irish, Welsh and Scottish. And thank God for that. Personally I'm a big supporter that Bond should remain as British as possible (meaning British cast and most importantly British crew). And although the choice is limited, there are still a couple of suitable Commonwealth actors who could play Bond.

I don't think it'll ever come down to having to cast an American. However, as an American (and as an apiring actor), I find that policy highly insulting. What, a good actor isn't good enough because he's American. That's just bull. The UK and US are very close, we're like brother nations almost.

But still, I'd prefer to see an Englishman because very few American actors can pull off a convining British accent of any type (which is a tad important for James Bond). But I'm sure there are a handful of Americans could be a good 007. But veeeery few indeed.

I just don't like being told no, esspecially that frankly. :)
