I was watching Goldeneye last week and something came to me. Do you think Alec and ouromov were in cahoots at the time of the mission. Was Alec betraying crown secrets to the Soviets? Just some interesting observations on my part. What do you guys think? Have a great day!!!

Well I always thought Oroumov, realizing that Communism in Russia was on decline in the late 80's, thought it would be best to strike back at the west for doing such a thing. 006 probably convinced Oroumouv that this was that he had the perfect way in doing so (using the then devolping TIGER helicopter). Oruoumouv probably saw the connection between that and the GoldenEye satellitte and thus the plan was concieved.

OR

006 somehow, on a mission in Soviet Russia, obtained information on the GoldenEye satiltte. Somehow, he knew Oromouv, and made a deal with him about Arkangel, promising him revenge against the capitialists, and advancement in the gov (M did say he saw himself as the next man in Russia). After that, 006 probably told Oromouv about the devolping TIGER technology, and made the GoldenEye connection. Somehow, 006 was able to arrange Oromouv's advancement in gov to become head of the space division, that time gave Trevelyan the ability to start up his organization and get cronies like Boris and Xenia on board...

I suppose there are three ways to look at it

1. From the point of the view of the movie and what that tells us

2. Go find the book and see what that says about it all

3. Accept that sometimes scriptwriters can drop a little too much e and it all seems just hunky dory to them at the time

The Movie

All through the movie Alec keeps telling James how James betrayed him by setting the timers to three minutes instead of six.

Now why James just didn't reply "Look Alec I am sorry, but I had just seen you be shot in the head at point blank range. Don't you think it is an understandable mistake if I thought you were dead?

I wouldn't have thought timer settings would have made much difference at that point, and theoretically I would have snuffed it too as I was on my way to surrender only because you had just been captured I might add".

And then there were Alec's obvious issues with his parents that initiated the plot. But you do have to wonder when all this deep seated hatred for anything British popped up? In the first scene it was all "buy me a pint", "toodle pip", and "for England James",

(Incidently does anyone but me think these are probably not phrases you should be bandying around when infiltrating a Russian chemical weapons facility? "It was all going to plan sir, then one of the Russians heard "buy me a pint Alec" and suspected there may have been British spies around".)

Then next its "my parents were betrayed by the British". Certainly James seems to have no idea about Alec's hidden hatred and he was his best friend. Way to be a caring and supportive friend there James.

And the less said about M16's competancy to actually do a background check on their agents is trully becoming legendary... Now just fill this form in here, name, adress, prefered gun ... lovely Miranda - good to have you aboard.

I once started a thread about Alec's unfounded blame on James setting the timers too short. Awfully surprised Bond couldn't say what Dr Crane said and then got the audience laughing at Alec.

But MI6 didn' catch the Leinz Cossack parents (bad screening has become a habit), so we can assume Bond would know no more.

This is how I see Trevelyan's story:

Alec researched into his parents on his own and found what MI6 thought he'd never find. So he finds that his parents were betrayed by the British government shortly after WWII. Then he gets angry, but decides to concoct a careful plan--ironically to defect to the country that had them executed--so his revenge will hit the government the hardest. He will defect to the USSR.

Alec signs up for the Arkhangel'sk mission with his friend, James Bond. MI6 briefs him about Col Ourumov, and Alec perhaps sees that Ourumov is going places, and will be in general staff in Leningrad or Moscow, soon. Alec and Bond are brought to Arkhangel'sk at different times, and Alec naturally chooses to go first.

While there, Alec surrenders himself to Ourumov immediately, and hands over quite a bit of info--gains respect and trust. Reveals he is a Cossack (not Lienz~). Apparently Cossacks are a community who know each other when they see them and are from all parts of what the USSR encompassed, so if Ourumov is a Cossack, there is a bond between them.

Anyway, Alec is now defected. But he is a coward and cannot face his friend as a traitor--nor have his friend killed. Also, if Bond goes back to England with the news that he witnessed Alec getting shot, Alec will not be a suspected defector.

So Alec convinces Ourumov to fake his death with a blank shot in view of Bond, and to have Bond escape. Of course the ordinary soldiers cannot be trusted, so Ourumov must let a few die by Alec and Bond (and himself, which requires a rather well-placed real bullet in amongst the blanks); Ourumov tries his best to keep them from killing Bond.

It works, for nine years Britain (and James) don't suspect a thing, then he plots further revenge on Britain, an in doing so, gives himself away to his old friend. Who he now actually hates for setting the timers at three minutes; while Alec and Ourumov watched Bond escape from outside, they left the explosives. The dumb soldiers were too busy wondering why Ourumov was stopping their fire, and no one thought of the explosives until half of Alec's face was shattered in the bottling room explosion. (Or was it the nerve gas which caused the skin to go funny?)

If I may interject, MI6 did know that Alec's parents were Leinz Cossack's recall this exchange if you can:

Bond: How did the MI6 screening miss that your parents were Cossack's

Alec: Once again your faith is misplaced, they knew. And in one of lifes little ironies the son went to work for the Government that was the death of his father and mother.

Ok, thats not exact, but that is what was said. Wondered why you guys missed that point :)

This has always confused me a little... 006 is pissed at Britain because the acts of the British government lead to his parents being murdered by Russians. So he betrays Britain and works with Russians against England?
Shouldnt he more more upset with the Russians who actually killed his parents rather then england?

I'm not sure that Alec is working for anyone, rather I think he was based in Russia and using the Russian's. I think the only person he's working for/with is himself.
