Casino Royale will be screened for the first time with the score performed live by a full symphony orchestra as part of our ever popular Films in Concert series.

This will be the first time an entire Bond score has ever officially been performed live, as the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra play David Arnold’s powerful score in sync with the film on the big screen. David Arnold, who has scored five Bond films, will discuss his collaboration with the 007 franchise in a pre-concert question and answer session.

I've been to a couple of these and they're incredible, but that's a slightly disappointing choice; I'd much rather see a Barry one.

I was lucky enough to see my all time favourite film, Jurassic Park, in the same circumstances last December. It was amazing.

 

CR is one of my favourite Bond films,, although the music isn't the best for this kind of thing, but alas the one friend who would have been up for it can't make it anyway.

 

I read that this is the first in a new agreement that has been made, so I hope we get, say, The Living Daylights, soon.

I know what you mean, however I also think it's good to see a newer Bond film get the limelight like this. The older films already get their fair share of attention. Casino Royale's score is pretty good, too.

Agreed; my choice would be that or, perhaps less likely: Moonraker. But let's face it, if they did a Barry it would be Goldfinger.

Yep. Look, I like Goldfinger, and it's an important film in the franchise. I get all that. But the fawning it receives goes overboard. As if nothing in the franchise ever bettered it. I think that's a narrow mindset. Give me Barry's Moonraker score over Goldfinger any day of the week.

I guess the only issue with doing OHMSS is I can't imagine they'd get the same sound for weird synth thing that Barry used at several points in the score: the only time I've heard anyone trying to recreate that it's been horrible!

Barry's music for this film is sublime and for my part gives the film a gravitas that ensures it stays on the right side of being too funny. The cue for the journey to the space station is glorious.

Barry originally wanted to score a double album for Moonraker and the producers initially agreed.  That the original soundtrack is barely 30 minutes, and the initial showing in mono, was indeed a crime.

 

As for the live screening, You Only Live Twice would be glorious live, especially as the travelogue nature of the movie lets the music carry most of it.  And still sports some solid action cues.

As for Moonraker, there's not a lot of  Barry music in that film to begin with. The space music is great, but you'd have to sit through a great amount of Tchaikovski, Strauss, Bernstein and samba before you even get there. Not worthy of a live performance I'm afraid.

That's rubbish! It's full of beautiful original music. You may as well say you have to wade through five whole notes of a John Williams composition!

 

I must say, given the slightly poor representation of the score on record, it would be a bit of a crime to perform the film without rerecording the score. I think fans all over the world would love that.

And this orchestra is amazing: the first one of these I saw was Raiders and I've heard some fairly dodgy performances of that over the years- when the film began I actually thought they were cheating and playing in the original recording: they get it that right. If Casino Royale's your thing then you'll get a blast from this.

Secondly, what with sound recording techniques for the modern movies, just how 'improved' can a live performance be over and above modern amps and today's speakers?

Accord to Geoff Leonard's calculation, there is 44 minutes 27 seconds of music in Moonraker in total (http://www.filmscore...10986&archive=1)

That's including the title song, end title song, classical music and samba (though arguably excluding Close encounters).

If you throw out those, you're left with about 37 minutes of original score. YOLT and OHMSS have over an hour. Casino Royale has almost an hour and a half.

Now watch Moonraker again and pay attention at how much music you really hear.

Yeah, it's probably the most haunting and lush Bond soundtrack in the canon - and at the same time it's one of the most playful with the Close Encounters and Magnificent 7 references. I love it. A number of tracks are not available, namely the freefall sequence and the gondola chase, but we're lucky to have most of them.

You basically watch the film; but at times the film's sound (dialogue and effects) do get dialled down a little so that you can enjoy the orchestra. I did find it rather infuriating that a few people started to chat during the end credits of Raiders, apparently thinking that the film had finished. But the orchestra were playing arguably the best music of the night! 

 

I'm not really sure what the second question means, I'm afraid.
