Sad news. Clifton James, better known to most of us as Sheriff J.W. Pepper, had died aged 96.

I always loved him in interviews. He seemed so affable and approachable, and like he really enjoyed his time in the Bond films. And everybody who worked with him has said much the same. A good, long life. RIP.

JW Pepper in LALD is one of the few comedic performances that still gets a laugh from me every time I see it, even though I must be close to 100 viewings by now.  And it was the key to me finally winning my grandfather over to Bond fandom, no doubt because he knew a few JW's himself.

Godspeed, Mr James.  And by that I mean, like a reg'lar Ben Hur.

RIP sad news.

Sir Roger Moore tweeted:-  “Terribly sad to hear Clifton James has left us.

“As JW Pepper he gave my first two Bond films a great, fun character.”
