Some sad news first thing this morning. Former Beatle Ringo Starr has announced that record producer Sir George Martin has died, aged 90.

Sir George produced the theme "Live And Let Die", composed by Paul and Linda McCartney, and wrote the score for the film, and also produced the theme "Goldfinger", composed by John Barry, Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and performed by Shirley Bassey - he was therefore involved with two of the best known Bond themes in the entire series.

He also worked with John Barry on other projects, and of course was best known for acting as record producer for The Beatles - obituaries this morning calling him the "fifth Beatle".

He's had a long and distinguished career in popular music and recording and will be sadly missed. RIP.

A real credit to the Bond universe and industry in general.

He did some truly terrific work in Live and Let Die, using both the theme song and the Bond theme to great effect, for romance, action and suspense. It all had a very early seventies style, different from what had come before, but still perfectly appropriate for the individual film and the series as a whole.

R.I.P. Sir George Martin.. The soundtrack to Live and Let Die is in rotation today for me on my iPod. I actually did not know that he produced Shirley Bassey's "Goldfinger" or that he was responsible for getting Matt Monroe signed to EMI just before he recorded From Russia With Love. Sir George will be missed!

LALD is one of my very favorite soundtracks too. Paul McCartney acknowledges that Sir George was a consummate composer and arranger and that he learned a lot about music from him.

Saw this the other day, and thought about going through my own musical rite of passage, as we all do, with obsessing over the Beatles.  His orchestrations on Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road, his anything goes attitude with encouraging the Beatles to experiment with sounds on Rubber Soul and Revolver.  I completely forgot he composed the Live and Let Die score.  Either accomplishment would warrant respect and sadness over his loss.  The fact that both accomplishments, and countless others, belong to one man speaks to the legend of George Martin.  Half of all Bond composers have now passed.  With David Bowie, Glen Frey, Vanity, Natalie Cole and several other musical talents passing, 2016 is proving to be a tough year for music.

RIP Sir George. A great producer (the Beatles wouldn't have been so successful without him) and a great composer. LALD is easily, far and away my favorite non-Barry score.

 

Losing him and Ken Adam in the same week...yikes.
