I'm not slating Newman at all for what he has done for the two Bond films, my only comment is that the tracks that were used to really stand out were re-jigged 'Skyfall' cues. I'd have liked fresh music to maybe connote Bond and Oberhauser's connection (akin to 'Skyfall' track) and a new action piece of music for the car-chase.
Just something so I didn't think about 'Skyfall' watching action.
But using themes is something every composer does. Barry did it. Williams did it. I see no difference here.
I'm all for themes, as I find that is an obvious cue between films or characters. I admit 'Skyfall' worked when played during the Rome funeral as it made links to Bond and Oberhauser and their past probably at Skyfall Lodge.
Like 'The Force Theme' in Star Wars and Barry with the basic James Bond theme - they tie characters into a series of films.
IMO Newman should have used a new variation of the Bond theme to root 007 down in his action, and not just use cues from 'Skyfall' itself as they didn't mean anything. The action music from 'Skyfall' was good for that film, and I just wanted something new for this one.
Every Star Wars film and Bond theme have different cues for action; be it to mix their location or mood, and I felt this is where Newman lacked in 'SPECTRE' and just re-used basic cues that had gone before rather than do even more new tracks.
The BIG decider (assuming he returns with the team) is what we have in store for Bond 25.
