Some I've spoken to have expressed the thought that some of the action of SPECTRE was a bit one-dimensional, and suggested the best bit of a Bond action sequence is the change of direction - whether that's from different terrain, different vehicle or a different threat. It wasn't something I'd thought of before but makes a lot of sense.

From my point of view, that would make the Madagascar parkour and Turkey car/train chase the best of the Craig era. However, I'd also throw the Mexico Day of the Dead in there too.

What does everyone else reckon? I'll try to create a poll - but obviously some who haven't yet seen SPECTRE may wish to wait.

Man that's tough.

Without going too much into things now, I love the Italy car chase from the PTS in 'Quantum Of Solace' but also find the PTS from 'SPECTRE' a thing of loud, chaotic beauty with fantastic stuntwork - a real thrill to watch.

They are all great sequences, taking in the action and the music and brutality, but for action I'll go, for now, with the Day Of The Dead pre-titles.

It has to be Day of the Dead pre-sequence for me. The reaction of the festival goers really pushed home the terror and suspense of the scene.

All of the PTS from the Craig films have been spectaculars, but I'd go for the first - the Parkour running sequence which seems to go on forever but is brilliantly done, and the new one. The aerial shots were great and how they got away with the helicopter doing what it did with all those extras below I don't know! Think of the potential for catastrophe - unless they had some way of making it appear as it did without risking the extras. Maybe those of you who are film makers could enlighten me! ;-)

The Day of the Dead PTS is outstanding :D But not my favourite Craig Bond action sequence. I'd rank the parkour chase and the Miami airport scenes above it, because the stakes are higher and the choreography better, as well as the transitions in location and gradual escalation - like mini-movies in their own right. SF's PTS achieved something similar.

Overall, SP's action didn't move me the way it should've. The tone of the Rome car chase was all wrong (lovely conclusion, though). The finale was a washout for me - no tension at all. I blame the trailers for spoiling the Austria chase - but I'm sure I'll like it more on rewatching!

Thanks for the poll!

YES - good point. The screams heard when the helicopter starts to spin is really quite eerie and it drums home how dangerous the whole stunt was and also in terms of the innocent people below.

Poor Quantum of Solace, lol. Not having seen Spectre, I can't comment on it, though I can't wait to see the Day of the Dead sequence. So, for now, I will go with the stairwell fight in Casino Royale. It was a nasty and brutal sequence, topped off with Vesper having a nervous breakdown for helping Bond kill Obanno. Overall though, I'd say that Skyfall had the best action. The fight in the skyscraper is insane and one of the most beautifully shot scenes in the entire series.

Though I may be crucified, I'd like to stand by my argument of SPECTRE having the best action sequences of all of Craig's films.

I agree SP's action scenes are the best conceived, Trevelyan. But for me, they were sorely lacking in tension. So CR still trumps the others imho, for now...

I go with the parkour chase as the best action scene and SPECTRE having the best overall action--but Casino Royale is close.

The action scenes in this film are weirdly lethargic. The great stunts ate unimpressive in context.

I did enjoy the attack/defense of Skyfall lodge, and as a whole I love the energy of QoS. Yes, the boat chase in Haiti is a mess, but the film is bookended with the car chase - short and violent, and Perla las Dunes which I enjoy for it's ability to merge two different threads.

But in reality, for DC, t's the parkour - not technically the PTS, it's still an unmatched introduction of a new actor in the lead (though I love TD in Gibraltar).

Great thread idea. Would love to see a "Craig's Greatest Scenes" poll. The end of CR is unmatched imo. The epic scene of "epic scenes." Amazing. My favorite moment in movie history. "Who is this?" You know the rest B)

The Craig era has managed to provide some of the greatest sequences in franchise history (Parkour, Day of the Dead, some other great hand to hand combat scenes).... along with possibly the worst car chase in franchise history... maybe only rivaled by Dr. No (but that was a product of it's time and budget). What a total waste, especially considering the setting.

The Madagascan parkour remains the trademark Craig era action scene, in my opinion.

I agree - it's amazing. I love the Day of the Dead scene but the Parkour chase is still the best.

I'm going to give QOS a little love here...The PTS car chase and the fight with Mr. Slate are two of my favorite action sequences in the Craig era. I think that that film's staging and stunt work are among the most elaborate I've ever seen. Where it all went wrong was in the editing room (and the shaky camera work didn't help either).

I picked the Skyfall PTS just because it features so many stunts and finally feels like Craig is James Bond (that scene where he jumps from the crane onto the carriage and casually walks through the car!)

Overall, I voted for Quantum of Solace just because every action scene in it is so brutal.  The only action piece in it where I don't feel danger is the Bolivian plane scene, especially with its so obviously CGI'd skydive.

The Parkour chase in CR did have me experiencing a fear of heights in the theater though.

Another thought I've been having, and this is a good thread for it, is Craig's 'blunt instrument' of Bond constantly breaking through things (dry wall in CR's construction site, for example.)  Whereas Connery/Lazenby/Brosnan's 007 finds out how to open a secret door, Craig just smashes through the wall to a secret room.  Whereas Lazenby (or was it Tracy), ski jumps off snowy roofs of houses, Craig plows right through them with a plane, intentionally taking out two cars in the process.  Whereas Dalton misses shooting his target through a window, Craig takes out three baddies and the bomb which then blows the entire building.  "Bottoms up."

His vehicles are left doorless, wingless, landing gear-less, parked at the bottom of a river, rolled a world record number of times, Volkswagons crushed like beetles.  Houses sunk, buildings exploded, hotels engulfed, and a Guinness World Record setting explosion in a crater.  He's the unstoppable force.

the day of the dead scene was great, but the part that sticks out to me isn't the action, it's the opening leading up to it.

i think i still have to say the chase on the crane (why didn't he just wait for him to come down? lol)

I´m still a bit disappointed by the ejector seat-conclusion in SPECTRE.

It is only filmed with a shot of Bond landing and letting go of the parachute.

While I love the nonchalant way he keeps walking I would have preferred a shot of Bond higher up in the air with the parachute and then landing.

The way it is done in the film appears to be a budgetary cut down version.  Pity.

My first time watching that scene, it wasn't clear to me the road was cutoff and he had to eject.  Night filming, I guess.  I wished Newman had used the Bond theme here, instead of reusing Grand Bazaar at the end of Backfire.  Even Monty Norman's original arrangement would have hinted at the old school we were about to see.

At least they didn't have the union jack parachute again!

We don't see the flight itself, but I thought the pre-ejection technology on the DB10 was fantastic. I assume it's so thorough because the driver's life is paramount - when you eject the passenger you're not caring about their safety. Loved the "good evening" quip, too. That's the type of Bond I love most.
