So, being a first time caller/long time listener, I thought I'd put this out there-what if you could change the historical line up of Bond actors and their movies? Would you keep it the same or change it? Would you delete or add actors or movies?

How about this as an alternative...and remember, this is obviously a "perfect world scenario" type deal..

Connery's first 5 stay the same, and then things get shuffled a bit:

The Lazenby era-

1969- OHMSS, '71-DAF, '73-LALD

The Dalton era-

'75-TMWTGG, '77-TSWLM, '79-MR, '81-FYEO

The Lewis Collins era-

'83-OP, '85-AVTAK, '87-TLD, '89-LTK

The Brosnan era-

'91-GE, '93-TND, '95-TWINE, '97-DAD, '99-License Renewed

The Eric Bana era-

'01-For Special Services, '03-Role of Honour, '05-Colonel Sun

The Craig era-

'07-CR, '09-QOS, '11-SF, '13-Spectre, '15-Icebreaker

So, that's it...2 new actors in Collins and Bana, Roger Moore's been dropped from the playing sheet, and a reshuffle with Dalton and Brosnan both coming in earlier, and Lazenby getting more screen time. John Gardner's 1st 4 books (which I consider his best) all get a screenplay, as does Colonel Sun.

More movies, more actors, and less slapstick. I think a younger Dalton could have put a more steely edge to the weaker Moore movies of the '70's. Collins and Bana both play the same sort of game as Craig, and given the chance could have been great Bonds.

I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Gardner novels (and Amis/Markham novel) as movies... it *could* work, but EON has made it clear that they'd rather get someone else to write a new story before they would even *consider* adapting any of the non-Fleming novels.

I guess there could be an alternate universe in which they felt they had no other options but to adapt a different novel... if 'Casino Royale' had flopped, perhaps.

THE SEAN BEAN ERA
  • 1998 - Licence Renewed
  • 2000 - Tomorrow Never Dies
  • 2002 - The World is Not Enough
  • 2004 - Die Another Day

So, he would have to die in every movie, right? And would he have been 006 in 'Goldeneye' and then get "promoted" to 007 or would it be a Walter Gotell/Joe Don Baker situation?

What gives ?

No one has Barry Nelson in their mix !!!

Nor, for that matter, Toby Stephens or David Oyelowo......Oh...no, let's please not get all the way into all the audiobook readers prior to Mr. Oyelowo (even though it interestingly includes Rosamund Pike for TSWLM, and...egads let's please not feed this fantasy any further he only played a spy in a TV show for heaven's sake and his mouth is pinched shut so just, no ! Damian Lewis read DAF)

Some great thoughts there, Bond fans. I'm seeing a lot of love for Dalton and Lazenby...had never thought of Jason Isaacs. And some good flashbacks to older stories like Risico and The Hildebrand Rarity. Keep 'em coming!

An interesting thread. We've done a little bit of this elsewhere when discussing the "Blofeld trilogy" but not the whole canon. Reshuffling the pack as it were would mean not only new actors in other films but some of the films themselves would be different - some might not even have been made.

Anyway here goes;

Connery era;

1962 - Dr No

1963 - From Russia With Love

1964 - Goldfinger

1965 - Moonraker (the novel, but some foreign locations probably added)

1967 - Thunderball

We assume SC still gets fed up with the role so;

Lazenby era;

1969 - OHMSS

And we assume GL still walks from the part after one film, so;

Connery returns;

1971 - You Only Live Twice - the book not the space age epic (rockets already covered in Moonraker)

Moore era;

1973 - The Man With The Golden Gun - including that notorious opener from the book!

1974 - Diamonds Are Forever - gangsters, not Spectre, though "Spectreville" stays in!

1977 - The Spy Who Loved Me - except there's no YOLT style epic for it to remind you of!

1979 - A View To A Kill - but a space based epic similar to MR the film. Zorin isn't just out to create a super race - he's the

           prototype of them, created by Mortner/Glaub.

1981 - For Your Eyes Only - back to basics

1983 - Octopussy

Taking liberties here, Roger Moore sails off into the sunset, as he did in OP;

Dalton era;

1985 - The Living Daylights

1987 - Live And Let Die - complete with Leiter losing his leg to a shark

1989 - Licence To Kill - but with Milton Krest as the main villain, more like the monster in the Fleming short story, set in the

           Indian ocean/Seychelles, and plot not about drugs

1991 - The Property Of A Lady - the missing fourth Dalton movie

Brosnan era;

1995 - GoldenEye

1997 - Tomorrow Never Dies

1999 - The World Is Not Enough

2002 - Die Another Day

(Can't think of a reason to reshuffle them yet!

Craig era;

2006 - Casino Royale

2008 - Quantum Of Solace

2010 - Risico

(The "Quantum trilogy")

2012 - Skyfall

2015 - SPECTRE (Quantum returns, but under new name and management)

I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to a few of those.  Roger Moore as James Bond going undercover as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation being the main one, followed by Pierce Brosnan's turn as Bond in Remote Mines of Golden Africa.

I know there was talk of Halle Berry doing a "Jinx" spin off movie after DAD, but who would have guessed that MI6's art expert Jim Fanning was lined up as the main character in Octopussy? Makes sense though; Fanning wouldn't have overbid for the Faberge egg, gambled with it at a gaming table and ended up losing it only for the egg to be smashed by a power crazed Russian general.

Which in retrospect would have made for a pretty dull movie.

My post, "Watching the Films in Book Order, from a 2015 perspective" moved to "New Theory which unifies "reboot" and "original" timeline."
