RIP to Sir Godfrey Tibbett. Others might know him as John Steed from the Avengers.

As a lifelong fan of The Avengers, this makes me really sad. We've lost Christopher Lee and Patrick Macnee in the same month, both at the age of ninety-three.

Not to make light of the situation, but there's a charmingly poetic rhyme in there :)

RIP. He was perfect in AVTAK, and a great choice as narrator for the 'Inside' docs on the DVD's.

There's something about being a British actor that seems to guarantee longevity.

Here's to you, Mr. Macnee. In the meantime, I'm still in the B&W episodes of the Mrs Peel megaset.

I just saw this. What sad news. Yet another person I thought would always be around.

Steed was possibly the most suave character ever to grace the TV screen.

May he always keep his bowler on in times of stress and watch out for diabolical masterminds.

I know. I had to rephrase my post to keep it from sounding like a nursery rhyme.

Very sad news. Patrick Macnee created a character in John Steed who, to me, seemed unflappable. At times more so than Bond. A quality I've always admired in anyone.

The "Avengers", I know, means something else to many these days, but I know what it means to me.

RIP Patrick Macnee.

I always thought there were only ever really three, true gentlemen in film;

Roger Moore, Peter Cushing, and Patrick MacNee.

RIP.

I do not know much of his work besides The Avengers, AVTAK and a couple of films (and unfortunately not the best ones) but what he brought to Steed, This mix of style, smoothness but also strenght, resolution and above this little hint of distance was  unique.

Chapeau, l'artiste !

Congratulations Pat and Chris. I've been truly saddened by their departure, but we have no business being depressed. These guys had marvelous careers and a great innings. Any actor should be so lucky.

I have been enjoying the repeats of The Avengers on True Entertainment. The plots are wildly ridiculous, the acting fairly wooden and the direction all over the place - but by golly its fun and part of that sense of enjoyment has to be attributed to Patrick Macnee who as the debonair John Steed, never without bowler and umbrella, always plays it with a knowing twinkle.

Of course he seemed to do little else for much of his career - The New Avengers in the 1970s, A View to a Kill - minus bowler and umbrella but plus a cap and a Rolls Royce - much work in Broadway theatre - but always retaining that knowing twinkle.

He was probably at his best during the quite racy black and white Avengers Season 4 with Diana Rigg where the two heroes swap double entendres while biffing the bad guys. Splendid stuff which really ought not to be missed. The film makers and cast of that modern comic strip spin off lot 'The Avengers' should watch it and learn a thing or two about not taking their subject so seriously.

RIP.

A real shame, but happy that he lived a long and very iconic life to bring us some real memorable characters.

RIP Sir Godfrey.

Sad news indeed. A very likable actor and, from all appearances, man as well. I liked him in most everything I saw of him. He was one of the best things about A View To A Kill and one of the best allies of the series. He will be missed.

R.I.P. Patrick Macnee.
