Love it! It's Berlin in the background, isn't it?

Definitely. That's the TV Tower on Alexanderplatz and Oberbaum Bridge in the background.

Thanks stromberg! Somehow I expected Berlin to be used in story's finale.

Warren Ellis on VARGR: http://www.bleedingc...t-least-a-year/

Some new details about the plot.

Plus it turnes out Ellis will be writing James Bond stories for at least a year. That means at least one more series.

I'm more and more excited about this!

Sorry, My bad. Had been reading the (surprisingly vicious) thread on Writing's on the wall beforehand, It may have turned off my ability to read tone.

Just wondering is each of the issues of the comic books going to more then one cover art design?

From what The Book Bond site is showing, there are like three different ones for issues 2. That it depends on which one(s) any of one's local comic book store(s) will get in to sell.

The reader has to be both a literary fan and a movie fan to pick up Ellis' homages

POSSIBLE SPOILER !

The Quartermaster states "This is a gun for ladies,007 and not very nice ladies at that."

Paraphased the real Geoffrey Boothroyd in his correspondence with Mr. Ian Fleming.

Bill Tanner states "She's(Moneypenny) M's last line of defence in the event of a breach."  (Moneypenny is cleaning a handgun at her desk when 007 arrives for his standard briefing with M.)

Paraphased George Lazenby's comment to Miss Lois Maxwell during the routine flirting scene in OHMSS.

It's starting well.

Picked up my copy yesterday (the standard "Cover A"). According to the cover gallery inside, there are 24 versions - the best being "Cover T" which is exclusive to a Midtown Comics. It is in the 50's pulp detective novel style, with Bond sitting on a (hotel?) bed tying his shoes.

The Quartermaster states "This is a gun for ladies,007 and not very nice ladies at that."

Referring to Walther P99, by the way. I'm not sure if I'd call a 9mm automatic pistol " a gun for ladies".

Anyway, the first issue of VARGR is disappointing. It's way to short and therefore moves to quickly (or is to simplified, like M briefing scene). In my opinion it should've been published in graphic novel format.
But "the pre-title sequence" is excellent, dark and violent.
It's hard to rate at this point.

One more thing. VARGR is very cinematic. There is no narration, only dialogues. It looks a little bit like a movie storyboard. Probably the reason why it moves so fast.

Upon reading James Bond issue 1, I'm struck by how much it is chapter 1 of a story rather than a stand alone in it's own right (which I'm quite glad of, but can see how others might not take to it)

Also - Ellis said "oh its literary Bond not film Bond" Yet there we are with a pre-title sequence and a Moneypenny who is the current film Moneypenny in both role and appearance.

Good to hear. I haven't gotten around to picking any of them up yet, but will be doing so in the near future. Harms, where does the strength of this series lie for you so far?

So far, it's doing a better job of making Bond contemporary than anything we've seen from the recent films.

Any news on the new adaptations of Fleming's originals so far - or has that been buried again? Or will they wait till Ellis' run is through?

I think that's coming after VARGR is completed.

I picked up the first three issues today and gave them a read. I'm also liking this series so far. I like the art a lot, and their interpretation of Bond gets a big tick. He chats with Tanner like the old friends they are in the novels.

He kills foes ruthlessly - several head shots and cuts a thug's fingers off with a spade, for example. He's a drinker, smoker and womaniser - a character says they remember Bond leaving a party with a Russian girl who wore highest heels they've ever seen.

And he's very much concerned with his personal style. So in other words, they've given us Bond, and through all that I still find him a likeable chap. He has a smile on his face, but a character reflects that he still seems rather sad.

The henchpeople are creative. A woman with mechanical arms that crushes foes. And her lover is a killer who cannot interpret pleasure. So interesting dynamic there. Neither of them can feel the intimacy of the other. All in all, I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Picked up issue 4 today. It had a fight with the henchman, a chat with the villain and left Bond in a deathtrap. All in all, it's good fun.

I liked how much of issue 4 was dedicated to one epic fight. As this goes on it becomes more and more apparent that Ellis is writing these with a collected edition in mind where the comics are chapters unlike how he did Global Frequency and Hellblazer where each comic was it's own thing. Tbh I don't think the latter approach would've worked with Bond so I think he made the right choice.

I want to give this a try but I was never able to find issue one in stores so I'm waiting to pick up a trade paperback of the whole story run.

Now that VARGR is complete, I have to say that I loved this. Reading all seven issues together, it plays out like a pilot for a bold, hard-edged Bond TV series.

Ellis has made Bond feel contemporary and sharp in a way that nothing featuring the character has felt in years.

Bring on EIDOLON.

To my surprise, these will be published in German, too. Issue 1 will be out on June 1st, regular edition at 19,80 Euros, limited edition at 34,80 Euros. Issue 2 will be out on September 1st.

As much as I enjoy Warren Ellis, you have to really give credit to Marster's artwork.

You can almost follow the plot with no dialogue.

Sequential art at its best, and it is Bond.
