Damn... I was just listening to his comments on BBC Radio 4 from Sunday. RIP Richard, you were one of my favorites.

Absolutely devastating. My love for Bond began with Kiel in The Spy Who Loved Me. He was the first movie villain I was truly terrified of. Like properly terrified. Those memories will always stay with me. A massive loss for many Bond fans worldwide. Jaws might not have been the best Bond villain of all time, but my god, he was terrifying. It's a shame his character went the way it did in Moonraker, but regardless, Jaws will never be forgotten. One of the most famous movie henchman of them all, and rightfully so. RIP Richard Kiel. You will be remembered, such a massive presence will never be truly gone.

Yet more sad news on the celebrity/entertainment front.  It's a testament to Mr. Kiel that he was able to create a character that has not only stood the test of time, but has become such a recognizable piece of the iconography that makes up the Bond franchise.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. It's rather upsetting to hear Kiel in this, he doesn't sound at perfect health at all. I've seen videos of him within the last year, and the difference in his voice is startling.

He didn't sound at all like himself, but still seemed to have a great time remembering and telling stories. I hope he left us with no regrets and that he knew how much we appreciated him.

Awful news to wake up to - and it's almost chilling as I write this there is a clip of his BBC interview playing in my ear during the 8am news on BBC Radio 2. So sad he's no longer with us.

 

You can't get more iconic a henchman than Jaws, and his legend will live on forever thanks to this memorable role. Imposing, terrifying, yet somehow warm and loveable! I'm so proud he made such an impact on the Bond universe and has such a following with fans, and even non-fans, thanks to the imagery he created by saying little but coming across as mighty as only Kiel could.

 

It won't be the same watching his films again now, but his struggle against Roger Moore's Bond will be all the more enjoyable now as we continue to enjoy and savour his role forever.

 

Rest in peace Richard - and thank you for being part of our universe.

Sad news indeed. I had the pleasure of doing an interview with him two years ago for a German magazine. Knowing the space limitations in print, I intended to get it done within some 20 minutes, but we ended up talking for almost 90 minutes. He really enjoyed telling stories from old times, but also about his recent projects. A very pleasant chap, nice and friendly, and he was always grateful for the Jaws role, which opened up so many opportunities to him. I do have that interview on tape somewhere, always wanted to make a full written version of it in English. About time to get it done, ASAP.

 

R.I.P., Richard Kiel. You'll be sadly missed.

Sadly, I just posted my thoughts and impressions after meeting Richard Kiel a year ago in the Richard Kiel interview thread. Sad loss for the Bond community all around.

Terrible news, but glad he leaves behind a very positive legacy. His fight with Sir Rog on the train was my first memory of Bond, from the age of probably 5 or 6, and it absolutely terrified me to the point of not watching another for a few years. RIP.

Man oh man, what a blow to the world, and Bond world in particular... Richard Kiel always seemed to me as a kind, fun-loving guy (not when he was biting into people's necks, of course). For all who had the chance to meet or interact with him, congratulations, as it seems as though he was a class act. I envy you all.

 

I had no idea he was in ill health to be honest, so when the news broke, I was rather shocked to say the least. So, later on that same night, The Spy Who Loved Me was put on and watched in his honor! 

 

So, here is to you Mr. Richard Kiel, thanks for all the memories and memorable performances!

I have been meaning to posting on this thread as soon as I heard but I got busy. He will never be forgotten among fans of the Bond franchise. He was a great villain. R.I.P
