What I mean by that is... well Casino Royale he's just a blunt instrument who dulls his feelings with booze and in Quantum Of Solace he's just out for revenge. In Skyfall he's kind of swept up into a situation he has little or no control over.
We see flashes of humanity in our man in these ones. Like in Quantum Of Solace when he cradles Mathis in his arms while he is dying and at the start of Skyfall when he'd much rather stay and try and help the downed agent survive than carry on going after the bad guy.
This is the side of Our Man I'd like to see explored more in the new one. Maybe that can be the driving force of the story in a way. He's caught up in something that kind of forces him to be a human being again - perhaps helped in someway by the new M.
The best example I can think of is Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom. At the start of that movie Indy is just a graverobber and an opportunist but the story has him find his humanity and by the end of the film he has become the man he is at the start of Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
Maybe the plot could deal with something like human trafficking or an illegal human slave trade. Our Man takes it on just as he would any other assignment and at the start of the movie he's just like he was in the previous ones. Yet over the course of the story his compassionate side is appealed to and ultimately his humanity - and who knows? Maybe actually becomes a real hero - and it serves as a redemption for him.
Before anyone scoffs at this idea I think it's totally possible to do without betraying Craig's portrayal of Our Man. Also I think it's a perfectly logical progression for his character and the right direction to take him in. With everything that's come before I think it makes perfect sense.
