Does anyone recall how the first four Bond films with Sean Connery, Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, and Thunderball, originally opened? Did they all originally have a hexagon logo during the UK and US releases, or did they always lack a logo?

I've seen old prints of the films at various revivals -and I'm pretty sure Goldfinger had the hexagon logo. The prints I've seen of  DR NO, FRWL and TB just opened with the gunbarrel.

I hate what they have done with the last few DVD/Blu Ray releases, using that new United Artists logo, I know it sounds petty, but I wish they'd leave that sort of stuff alone., and leave it how it was.

Funnily enough, movie logo's are right up my street.

Bring back this:

Remember that being on some of the Bond videos from the rental shop, AND this always gets me fired up for a bit of Dalton Bond:

It's just so 80's, I love it.

I'm with you that '82 UA logo with its ominous music remains one of the great studio logos. In fact, THE greatest.

Wish they'd add it to all the Bond films.

I grow up with the 94 version logo, still my favorite.

I'm right up there too about the logos. They were like a little warm-up to the gun barrel and kind of started that excitement and anticipation.

I'll also throw in the old Transamerica logo from the 1970s from the ABC broadcasts and the videodisc versions of the films. It didn't have music, just the logo.

And that was what made the films so perfect. Nothing but silence for a few seconds, and then the iconic theme song blasts through your ears.

Rocky I-II originally did the same thing.

Good call, I was going to mention Rocky. The fanfare with the championship belt before the action is as effective as the Bond gun barrel. Two of my favorites for sure.

MGM are contractually obliged to remove the Transamerica logo from reissues, unfortunately, unless it's built into the film.

You can still see it on some of the films that United Artists released back in the day, but don't own now, though. It's on the Blu-ray of Wes Craven's Deadly Blessing, which is now owned by Universal, for example.

I didn't know this until now, but not every United Artists film, up until 1967, had a logo. Some of them just had a text notice, like "Released Thru United Artists".

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, for example, most certainly did not have a logo originally. It may have in European prints, but never on any original prints in its Native USA.

Didn't Rocky IV and Octopussy had the 'Released thru United Artists' text, or something similar? I can picture the white text, with a black background.

On the latter, it opens with the 1983 MGM/UA roaring Lion, followed by a short bit of white text on a black background that says "UNITED ARTISTS PRESENTS".

I remember watching YOLT years ago and it had some weird retro 60's version of it.

The Closing Logo Group said that on some 1967-1968 UA films with that logo, a ten-note fanfare with the first seven notes like a solo cornet, and the final three a brass trio, was used. Oh man, I would love to hear how that one sounded! I never heard it before!

Great web, @Vahan!

The company puts its "actual" logo in front of their films. If you've seen the Bond films in the 80's you've seen the 80s logo and so on...

Here's videos of the James Bond films with the Transamerica logos intact. I am jealous the UK got to keep these, and we Americans didn't! Some observations:

The ones on OHMSS and DAF look wider than the ones on LALD and TMWTGG. I'm guessing it is because of aspect ratio composition differences when the films were first made.

Interesting to see that Moonraker used a still version of the 1975 logo, and on FYEO, the logo was a combination of the 1968 and 1975 versions.

I can't believe there's such a detailed page devoted to studio logos. Complete with the Scare Factor. Like I don't spend enough time on Bond sites, now I have this one to spend hours on.

Just when I think I've seen it all on the web :D

If you haven't noticed, I just added videos that show James Bond films with Transamerica logos, as well as videos from 19 United Artists movies with said Transamerica logos, including the opening to the 1980 HBO airing of Rocky II.

It seems the best way to find Transamerica logos would be to look for TV broadcasts of the films (Network of commercial-free Cable TV) from the 70's and early 80's.

We should get the mods to add a poll. What's your favorite Bond studio logo?

Mine is and forever will be the ominous pinwheel '82 logo.

While that logo may have been used for TV prints and some early VHS releases, it never actually appeared on any theatrical prints. For Your Eyes Only used a variation of the Transamerica logo and Octopussy and A View to a Kill started with the MGM lion.

I've just taken delivery of CED-to-DVD transfers of all the Bond movies released on the CED format in the US. The 'RCA Selectavision' edition of 'Diamonds Are Forever' has one of the "United Artists, A Transamerica Company" idents.

Nice to see this thread revived. Seems like it was a logo plaster, though. Underneath the UA logo for DAF, it originally said "Entertainment from Transamerica Corporation."

Here's a screencap from the RCA Selectavision edition of DAF. The ident is the animated version which commences with the blue logo 'growing' from the bottom of frame (In my earlier post, I was going from, unreliable as it turns out, memory of the text). In the coming months, I intend to add screencaps of idents, associated with a given release, over on www.007homevideo.com.

Good Day Folks,

This is my first post here, and I know this is an older thread, but I just wanted to add a link to the MGM/UA opening from 1983 - 1986?. This is my youtube page, of which I am just adding some Bond-related videos, one of which is a somewhat "unique" Gun Barrel Opening as well.

Please have a look at the MGM/UA opening at:

If you want to look around at the other videos that I have on there, feel free, and happy Bond(ing)

Wow! I didn't noticed this UA Logo's topic before: what a great treat!

I always thought I was the only one who missed the great Transamerica UA logo's from the seventies and the VCR logo from the eighties, but reading this now I know better!
