Reminds me of the time ca. 1996, when everybody only loosely interested in Bond knew - absolutely knew, beyond any doubt - that the next Bond song would be by Oasis/Radiohead/Blur/The Verve. People of course had their personal favourites, with Blur/Oasis usually showing the most backers. But it seemed regardless who you talked to, nobody had the faintest doubts these bands would somehow get the next five to ten films for their personal playground.

How wrong we were...

Strangely also no Trip hop for Bond, no Morcheeba, Portishead, Massive Attack, Tricky.

Well, if you listen to Goldfrapp's debut FELT MOUNTAIN and then see how they never - at least up to now - got around to a main titles song...

Of currently popular acts, I'd add Paloma Faith. Has both the looks and the voice for it, I think.

 

Dustin mentioned all those acts in the mid 1990s which were "dead certs." for a Bond theme. I'd add one more - Mel C from The Spice Girls, would you believe? Don't believe it? Well, the same red top tabloid which reported about TWINE, and told a gullible public that Sharon Stone was the villain, and Ewan McGregor her side kick (And Bond's long lost laddie!) also reported that Sporty Spice was to perform the theme tune.

 

It was Garbage, of course!

Right now, I'd probably have to go with U2 as my top choice of the realistic candidates. It probably would have been better to have them do the title track for either Die Another Day or Casino Royale, back when they were at the height of their resurgent popularity following All That You Can't Leave Behind and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. Still, they're one of those bands that simply should have done a Bond song (yes, I know Bono and The Edge wrote "GoldenEye") and I'd take them over most of the current acts out there.

Of the other current acts out there, I think that OneRepublic, P!nk, and Idina Menzel would be good choices.

Will U2 still be relevant to bring in the four quadrants of the market? Or will the young ones ask themselves: who are these old guys?

I'd say that U2 is about as relevant as Madonna was when she did "Die Another Day".  U2 is on the downward side of their second "prime", or maybe even completely past it, but so was Madonna in 2002, as the time 80s and early-to-mid 90s when she was one of the world's biggest popstars had clearly passed by then.  

 

I really hope that Adele isn't brought back for Bond 24.  I know that she'll be brought back at some point in the future, as she's for whatever reason the darling of EON and the general public, but I just find "Skyfall" to be a terrible song.  I'd rather they go in a direction that isn't pastiche this time around.  If we're going with a female performer, why not shake it up a bit and also have it be a rock song, as that's something that has, in the world of Bond, been dominated completely by the men.

I think it would be a mistake to have Adele perform the next theme tune. And I say that as one fan who really liked the Skyfall theme, "pastiche" or not. A Bond theme which refers back to the Monty Norman composition - as Bond themes did in the 1960s? Loved it!

 

But bringing back the previous artiste would suggest a lack of confidence in Bond 24 as a film on its own - almost like saying, "it's the same as last time, right down to the theme tune." The trick with the Bond films has always been to be the same but different.

 

That said, just as Shirley Bassey returned, I'd like an Adele comeback. In fact I wouldn't mind it for Daniel Craig's final performance as Bond.

Thinking about it - no performer returned back-to-back.  So maybe Adele will sit BOND 24 out?

 

I certainly would not mind having BOND 24 be completely different from SKYFALL (although I liked that one very much).

 

I agree with you, tdalton, on Madonna being past her prime when she did DAD.  But I guess as a celebrity she was still drawing enough attention to justify giving the song to her.  

 

U2, however, are a different animal.  A respected rock group with a politically charged frontman - is that sexy for EON/SONY?

 

I guess we would either have to look at a mainstream success (like Adele was) that did not turn off the youth quadrant but made the more adult audience comfortable as well.  I could also imagine them using Alicia Keyes again, but this time as a solo artist.

I would imagine the prospect of sold-out arenas hearing their theme song when U2 tours would be attractive for EON and Sony.  U2's relevance as a studio band may be in question at this point, but when it comes to touring and selling out arenas, they're still one of the best.  They're also quite good at the Oscar-bait music, having received nominations for "The Hands that Built America" and "Ordinary Love".  

 

Regarding Bono's political activism, I can't see that being an issue for EON.  Most of his causes aren't all that controversial, at least in the broad scope of the issue that he's addressing (i.e. AIDS, poverty, etc.)  He might ruffle some feathers in terms of how to get those goals achieved, which is something you almost have to do to achieve anything in the United States' political system, but I don't think that there's many out there who would say that the overall goals of his activism aren't worthwhile.

Shirley Bassey recorded "Mr Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" which was originally going to be the theme tune for TB. Did she do it as a recording project alone or in the expectation it would be used in the film? If the latter then "back to back" may have been the plan for GF and TB. In the end of course neither Dame Shirley nor the theme were used. (Nor of course was the Dionne Warwick version of MKKBB)

On an entirely personal note - I have to say a big no to U2. Simply because I hate them with every fibre of my being. 

 

If I heard U2 were doing the new Bond song I'd probably trash my house in abject rage. Cannot STAND them.
