I have been playing the alto saxaphone since 6th grade and I still play the saxaphone up in college because I love playing an instrument. Music is another language and I love the way the band comes together and the music starts coming together right before a concert. I chose the alto-saxaphone because when I got to be in band, I got to pick three instruments to try and then I decided between those three which ones I wanted to play. I chose the flute, the clarinet and the alto-sax (the instrument my dad chose when I couldn't think of a third instrument to play) I loved the alto sax the best and I have been playing ever since! It's a very big hobby of mine and I like to master new music and I feel very accomplished after playing in a band concert.

This sparked my interest, have you ever played an instrument whether it be in high school or you are just learning a new instrument. Also if you sing that's pretty cool too and I count it.

Ahh, I always wanted to learn saxaphone, but I was ushered into learning the clarinet in High School in order for my "lungs to develop better" and get used to playing an insturment of such scale. I played clarinet for about 3 years, and then soon forgot about the saxaphone. Still think it's a sultry, sexy sound whenver I hear it and good on you for playing it! Keep it up!

I have played the keyboard for about 11 years now, I love the keyboard - 1 and 2 tier, all sorts of models. I just love the different styles and sounds you can create on one instrument to create a big, atmospheric and stylistic tune. Plus it's great to unwind by letting your creative energy just flow. LOTS of movie themes I've self tought on there too, more than anything else!

Finally, was my bass guitar. I self taught myself that from 2004 to 2007 after my Duran Duran discovery took place after seeing them live in Manchester, just being curious about this 80s band, and falling in love with John Taylor's bass skills and wanted to try learn a piece of music history. I could do some, but not many bass tabs from the Duran Duran library, so spent time just learning by ear different song tabs here and there. But I sold my guitar due to space and not using it last year. A little era of my died when I sold that... *sigh*

As for singing? Well, only alone in my car! ;)

I played Sax when I was in 6th grade. But that type of music wasn't for me. Too me, there is not many more better feelings than relaxing in a hammock on a warm summer's day, whilst strumming my old acoustic guitar. Pure bliss! As for singing, same thing with me tcr, only alone in my car with the music loud enough that I can't hear myself! Haha!

Yeah I love singing when no one is around lol

The keyboard that's really awesome! We have a jazz combo teacher at my college and he is really really good at the keyboard and when he performs it's really cool. I really really wish i knew how to play piano, I mean that's a really pretty instrument.

I play the recorder... and that's it. I understand it's a easy instrument to master for someone just starting to study music, but in retrospect, my musical education was pretty disappointing. Imagine five people playing a theme on the recorder, all in unison, and without any other instruments. Harmony was an alien concept to us. But I like the sound of the recorder.

The recorder is really cool. I mean I think it's awesome to play an instrument, I mean I think music really connects people in unique ways and band is one of the things in high school that I really enjoyed.

This past year, I've finally had to let go of instruments I had once tried to play.  The first was the last one I was learning to play, the bass guitar.  Once a present in college, I sold it at a yard sale when someone inquired if I had any musical instruments for sale.  While cleaning out my parents' storage unit, I found my old recorder, but threw it out.  I also put out on the sidewalk a small electric keyboard as I realized I would never use it anymore.  Someone else would though as it was gone within the hour.  Finally, my brother-in-law asked about my cornet when cleaning out my parents' house, and so it got donated to my high school.  That was the first instrument I had learned to play.

While I never kept up with those instruments, it gave me an appreciation for musicians and most all genres of music--jazz, rock, classical, and even film score.  My favorite instrument was the keyboard, though I was the worst at it.  Love Tony Banks of Genesis and Marillion's Mark Kelly.  Really enjoyed reading The Music of James Bond by John Burlingame too.

Nice idea for a thread, Iceskater!

Yeah I just love playing my saxophone and it became a really big hobby of mine so it made me wonder if anyone on this site ever played an instrument. I really adore playing in band though, it's really cool we are playing this song called Nevermore and it's based off of Edgar Allan Poe's poem the Raven. It sounds really awesome because the piano starts off the piece and it's very majestic and creepy sounding but it's so cool. Plus I get the melody for a little bit of the song so that's always nice.
