This includes all three films, the books, the simrillion (sorry I can't spell) and the hobbit. I got this idea because I just finished watching the return of the king extended version yesterday.

To start off, my favorite character is Aragorn because he is just so bad ass! And if I could be in LOTR I would want to be an elf! :D

I shouldn't be in here but feel I need to express where I stand with 'LOTR'

When it came out back all those years ago, I watched 'FOTR' and enjoyed it as a fantastical adventure. I then got bored of the hype and couldn't see what the fuss was about, and I was very much backing up the prequel 'Star Wars' era and hated the bashing 'SW' got against this Enya-style film making of 'LOTR'.

I tried 'TTT' on DVD but got bored and found it very slow, and I've never seen 'ROTK'.

But now nearly 8 years on, after 'TH:AUJ' got me curious about it all again, I've bought the Kindle 'LOTR' trilogy and am half-way through 'TH' book itself, as I feel I should re-visit the trilogy of films with fresh eyes and try again, as I do like fantasy films and big adventures. I think it was the hype that put me off as I couldn't see why the world was going crazy for goblins, orcs, wizards and gollums.

I do wish to try them again, so I am sure I will be back.

And how many times can we fit short titles of films in a post with that 'LOTR', 'TH:AUJ' and 'SW' talk! :)

Good idea for a thread Iceskater!

I love LOTR and everything to do with it. I read The Hobbit when i was a child, and LOTR a few years later. Then the films came out and I loved them, still do.

The Hobbit wasn't quite as good as the LOTR, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Some really gripping scenes, like when Bilbo (an excellent Martin Freeman) spares Gollum's life. I'm not too happy that there is going to be another two films, but just hearing Howard Shore's score and seeing Hobbits, dwarves and Middle earth again makes me not care TOO much...

Its exciting that we're getting another trilogy out of it IMO.

Do you really think they can pull of making 6 hours nearly of film with just two-thirds of a book left to string out?

I remember that being the main gripe for certain fans/critics, but I think it's based on the book sure, but doesn't mean it has to stick to the book. Or does it though, being so faithful?

I will catch this on DVD and then try the LOTR trilogy again.

I actually saw the Ralph Bakshi-version in the cinema and became a huge fan. Decades later I loved the Peter Jackson movies. It´s just a massive achievement to bring these stories to cinematic life.

But...

I did not like THE HOBBIT at all. I wanted to. Maybe it was the 48 frames 3D that really worked against the magical feel of film for me. But even worse was the plodding storytelling blowing up every detail of the slim book to unnecessary proportions AND putting a framing device on it to stress the fact that this in fact is tied to the later trilogy. Talking about unnecessary again. Three hours that just feel like six. Only Martin Freeman is watchable.

And to think that THE HOBBIT will have two more three hour films squeezed out of this little story is really disgusting. I don´t feel the urge to see those in the cinema, maybe catch them later on BD. Jackson had the right instinct to let someone else do it. Unfortunately, he reconsidered. Of course, he´s laughing all the way to the bank.

Its not just The Hobbit that is being broken into 3 films, they are also going to use the appendices from Return Of The King.

Yeah see that's what I was confused about.. I was like three movies seriously..

I tried reading the Hobbit, but it's a very long book and he does way too much describing. Maybe if I get some freetime I will try and pick it up again.

I personally loved the fellowship. That's my favorite then Return of the King and then the Two Towers.

I know what you mean I managed to read The Hobbit right through but when I got hundred pages into Fellowship I gave up after seeing the film, I might return to it one day.

interesting thing about LOTR there is a few actors/actress who was in a James Bond film! I only half way through The Hobbit and I have never finish reading the LOTR books too long and not very interesting.........The Hobbit seem more enjoyable to read since not for adults and less complicated
