Whether playing Hamlet, Doctor Who or, as he does in this excellent spy drama by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, a French military attache, David Tennant has the knack of inhabiting a role so engagingly that you simply have to watch. In this deft two-part adaptation of the novel by Alan Furst, he plays Lieutenant Colonel Jean-François Mercier, an intelligence officer posted to Poland who is convinced that Hitler is poised to invade but whose warnings fall on deaf ears. To complicate matters still further, he is smitten by radiant League of Nations lawyer Anna (Janet Montgomery) whose love life is already complicated. Outstanding.
