I do not know about anyone else, but after watching SkyFall, I think it's safe to say that M's death scene had more of an emotional impact on me than Vesper's scene in CR. Maybe it's because we have had the grace of Judi Dench's presence for that last 18 years. Without a doubt, she is an Oscar winner for a reason. Ms. Dench is one of the greatest actresses not just in Bond films, but in general. But when it comes right down to it, the passing of Judi Dench's M is more like Bond losing his mother; she loved him and in his own way, as did Bond. however Vesper's death is really what made Bond, well Bond. The womanizing spy we love to watch.

Thoughts, comments, etc. What do you think?

I was more touched by Vesper´s death. Yes, I´m a sentimental romantic, but you can have lots of Ms and there was only one Vesper...

Was touched more by M's death. Better actress, better script, better music and a better film. Plus, she meant more to Bond.

Definitely touched more by M's death. I felt quite emotional as I watched. It probably helped that I had a Bond marathon up until today (watching them all in order before Skyfall) so all of her Bond films are fresh in my mind. Not only is it the death of her character but the end of an era for the franchise after 17 years of Judi Dench. She had a terrific run and it was quite an emotional ending but almost bittersweet in the sense that it felt like an appropriate time to say goodbye to her character and welcome Mallory. Bond's tears really sold it too. Impressive acting by all.

I felt M's death more. Not just for the fact that over the past three films they really built up the M/Bond relationship to a great one. But also because this is the end to a long run as M for Dench, an end of an era.

While I found Vesper's death to be quite sad, I also had not built up the longstanding relationship with her that the audience has enjoyed with Dench's M. I think that was why the ending took me by surprise; I really didn't think they would handle it that way. But I give the producers and writers a lot of credit for taking such a bold move with this character and the actor who played her.

Ditto for me.

M's death had a much bigger impact on me than Vesper's. Although Vesper's death was more dramatic, I wasn't really affected by it, because I knew Vesper had betrayed Bond.

Though M's death was more subtle, it, to me, was the saddest scene in the franchise. Poor Kincade couldn't do anything about it, and Bond cried for god's sake! And even I can admit: I shed a few manly tears.

I felt M's death more simply because I had already read Casino Royale and knew Vesper was going to turn out to be a traitor and was going to die. Foreknowledge kinda spoils emotional impact. Although I knew this was going to be Judi Dench's last movie as M, I actually thought she was going to get to retire and just sail off into the sunset. Her death blindsided me. Especially the way she died, slowly bleeding to death from a random wound.

M's.

The scene is more thematically compelling and much less over the top than Vesper drowning herself in an elevator underwater. I knew before hand that both character's were going to die, but the tragedy of Vesper is somewhat numbed by her last minute betrayal, and, arguably, Arnold's somewhat overbearing "Death of Vesper" cue which sort of screams " You should feel sad," whereas Newman's understated score provides a somber ambiance to an already moving scene. Also, Craig's acting during M's demise conveys much more raw emotion, much more overt sorrow, than his acting in the Vesper sequence.

I'm in the minority here, but I found it just as touching as the final scene with Bond and Tracey, and obviously more touching than Vespers.

Having said that, M's death took me completely by surprise, so that probably helped, I always knew about
Tracey, prior to viewing 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'.

Tracy's death.

LOL you must be joking. That was the most laughable scene! She was a bitch.

Compared to Vesper and M, she was an angel.

Um yeah! I had tears in my eyes when M died, Vesper didn't have that impact on me. Besides I don't think we see Bond cry over Vesper ever. He is bawling when M dies.

Indeed. M dying is a big deal.
