Since pre-title sequences have been closely linked to the main plot for arguably 25 years I am wondering will the old not-connected-to-the-main-plot-at-all mini-adventure in the beginning of the film ever make a return? I've always enjoyed those, especially the ones in Goldfinger and Octopussy.

I was thinking about this recently, and unless I'm mistaken, Goldfinger is the only one in the entire series where the PTS has nothing to do with the plot of the rest of the film.

Octopussy is the same - I don't remember Bonds escapades in Cuba having any relation to the rest of the movie. The same with FYEO.

'Moonraker', 'For Your Eyes Only' and 'Octopussy' aren't directly related to the main plot of the films - sort of either Bond doing a mini-mission or returning from one.

But I don't mind them having some link to the plot, but nothing TOO direct, so it is a case of a mini-adventure or mission for Bond. 'Tomorrow Never Dies' sort of had the feeling recently, as did 'Die Another Day' with a mini-mission taking place but involving people and items from the main story.

I do love them though, I hope we get ones like that in future. Minus the hard-drive, 'Skyfall' could haeve been a prime example, featuring non-speaking Patrice in the chase who links the story itself.

These days I doubt you'll ever get a PTS not connected to the rest of the movie, to be honest - storytelling has changed.

I count Moonraker as involving the plot, because Bond is late getting back to Mi6 because he "fell out of an aeroplane", which he explains to Moneypenny. It's a direct continuation of events, whereas in say Goldfinger, it's a totally abstract event.

you're wrong about Moonraker.
At the very beginning of the PTS, we see two men stealing the Moonraker, an event which causes Bond inquiry.

By the way, what happened to this hard-drive in SKYFALL? No explanation (correct me if I'm wrong) even at the end of the movie...

Thunderball too, in my opinion

Thunderball's Pretitile is irrelevant unless you count Blofeld's mention of Bouvier's death.

Ahh of course, how could I forget the stealing of the Moonraker?! D'oh! Scratch that.

I would like to see the PTS seperate from the rest of the plot but with a twist. Suppose Bond is suppose to target someone using explosive but he does not know the target somehow survive the attack and watches Bond escape.........

Somewhere in the middle, the target reappears and tries to kill Bond but fails when Bond kill him before he reveal who Bond is really say that he is a deep undercover or something

Indirectly the target tries to alert the villain who Bond is or something......it would be like someone stalking Bond and constant threat to him

The only ones that have absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the plot are FYEO and OP.

In GF, it's mentioned that he's going to Miami. That's enough of a connection for me.

My favourite PTS is TMWTGG, not featuring Bond at all, except the mannequin, and very little speech, set the film up very mysteriously

I would also support a not connected pre-title. But we can have the main story begin in the pre-title without Bond.

S. Africa - Cape Town: A diplomat killed, M is warned

London: M asks who is in Africa to Moneypenny, the answer is 007.

Equatorial Guinea: Bond in casino, after finishing his duty. But goes trouble in the casino.

Nigeria: Bond lands with the jet to Nigerian airport. Heads to S. Africa

Titles...

No, it's very relevant. Bond was injured by Bouvier whacking on him with a poker and ended up in Shrublands. Patricia Fearing mentioned the nasty bruise he received and Bond mentioned the widow who gave him the injury was no lady. Sounds relevant to me.

So it's just 'Octopussy' and 'For Your Eyes Only' then...? Crafty links in those pre-titles if you miss them.

Actually, if you think about it, FYEO's opening is somehow related to the main movie: both Bond and Melina focus on revenge.

Related in theme, yes. But you could jettison the PTS completely and it would never be missed.
The same is true of Goldfinger. Without the mention of a plane leaving for Miami, there is nothing else tying it to the main body of the movie.
In fact, the cable channel AMC once showed the movie without the PTS. Made no difference.
