How about making a new arch-nemesis, but not naming him Blofeld? That would suit both the reboot-feel and the awesome sense of continuity. So, quintessentially, the head of the Quantum organization is Blofeld, but without the name or the looks. Or, you know, the cat.

I feel that's the way that EON were going with Mr. White.  It would have been a great twist to find out that Bond had captured Quantum's head, only for him to escape.  The opera scene in QOS only added fuel to the fire for me.

I always saw Mr. White as more of a middle-man when it came to Quantum , rather than anything close to the head of the organization: In Casino Royale he is the one that sets up the deal between the Le Chiffre and Obanno and takes care of Le Chiffre when that deal goes wrong, if Mr. White was the head of Qunatum having him personally kill Le Chiffre would be slightly odd as he could send anyone else after him.
He also had something to do with Vesper (most likely the contact she gives information to before it is sold off) which would be a surprisingly lax approach to security for the head of an Organization, because if Vesper ever decided to repent they would be able to track him down with relative ease (as we see Bond do)  and in the Opera scene he does not actively take part in the discussion about Bolivia...Greene is very clearly in control of this meeting (presumably if White was the head of the organization Greene would ask his permission or defer to his advice in much the same way Largo and Blofeld interacted.)

If anything I think we can assume that Greene and White operate on similar levels (but their is another man above them all) from memory the description we got of the deleted scene with Guy Haines at the end of Quantum was that Mr. White was shot and killed by Bond in this sequence while in a meeting with Guy Haines, which could even suggest that Guy Haines outranked him in Quantum.

I think Dominic Greene, Mr. White,  Guy Haines, Gregor Karakov and  Moishe Soref, and possibly Yusef Kabira as well, are all some sort of executives of Quantum, but the mastermind has yet to be revealed, if it doesn't surprisingly turn out to be Gareth Mallory :P That character would then be the new "Blofeld", but I think we should not expect to see any familiar nods to Ernst Blofeld. He is past.

It would be a good idea to reuse these characters in future films as the main villains, since their nationalities and names nearly scream "Bond villain".

Bond should ALWAYS fight Blofeld.

I'm pretty sure one of the currently prominent architects of the Bond films agrees with me about that, too.  :)

No I don't like the idea of reusing Bond villains. Blofeld is in the past and it should stay there.

But while Austin Powers made great use of poking fun at 'Dr. Evil's' more silly aspects, Mike Myers also proved at the same time that Blofeld is a major pop culture icon.  Just like the Joker, Lex Luthor, Moriarty, Khan, Dr. Doom, etc., he is Bond's arch nemesis/opposite number and should not be left in the past any more than any of those previously mentioned  characters ought to be.  Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson and Mark Hammil (just to name a few) showed how a great character can always be reinterpreted for changing audiences.   Bond should always exist, and so should Blofeld.  His resurrection is long overdue, ignoring him when the series finally has the rights to his character would just be downright cowardly on the part of the writers and producers.  It's like Bond's martinis; Daniel Craig, instead of jettisoning the past cliches, finds reasons to reintroduce and justify their existence, and that's why Daniel Craig is my favorite Bond bar none.

I think Blofeld should be reintroduced. With the different take of the current films, bringing back Bond's nemesis could show another side of Craig's Bond and would make for a fitting closing story arc for his tenure, concluding with a finale at the Castle of Death. Blofeld does have the potential for iconic status in this day and age too. But it would need the right casting. Whoever were to play it, should play him like the cerebral villain that Telly Savalas portrayed not the clowns of Pleasance's and Gray's interpretations.

I agree with this.

I've become convinced, I want Blofeld to return, re-imagined and eviller than ever.

They might even keep the Persian cat. The James Bond series is so much more powerful than Austin Powers, so why should they bow to some caricature spoiling their splendid character? Austin Powers and Dr. Evil are to be ignored, and though it will surely draw some criticism, I feel like it is the right thing to do.

I'm still not convinced that the thought of bringing back Blofeld has even been considered by EON for reasons I've mentioned above, but if they bring him back then they need to cast someone BIG - someone who you can at least believe stands a chance in a mano a mano fight between him and Bond.  That's why I think Savalas is the only one who even got close to portraying the Blofeld of the books.  It’s not because he was cerebral.  It’s because he actually seemed more than capable of kicking someone’s @$$.

I'm somewhat certain actually that EON has been mulling over the idea of bringing back Blofeld, I know they have that option now if they do consider it and the subject has come up more than a few times to the producers et al. in interviews, with some interestingly wry responses.  Seems like they would have brought him back a long time ago had it been possible, now it's just a matter of time seems to me.   Barbara Broccoli seems the most opposed to it, but I think all she'll take is the right pitch to agree to it.

As far as the actor to play him, Telly Savalas really did set the bar.  I could see them making him some sort of master of disguise tho', perhaps so he could return multiple times played by many different actors?   I still think they're considering Idris Elba for the part myself.
