US astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the Moon, has died at the age of 82, US media report.
Earlier this month he had surgery to relieve blocked coronary arteries.
He walked on the Moon on 20 July 1969, famously describing the event as "one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind".
Last November Armstrong, along with three other astronauts, received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest US civilian award.
He was the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. He and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the moon.
Very sad news indeed. RIP.
RIP Neil Armstrong. The first man on the moon.

A true American Hero. He could have clashed in on his fame & been a huge celebrity but chose instead to stay out of the limelight. That's the definition of humility. A true patriot as well voicing his concerns over NASA's future a couple of years ago. His words will live on forever in our minds, and hearts. RIP

I was listening to a Radiolab - a popular radio/podcast program for those that don't know - and they were rebroadcasting their space episode. They played this clip from Apollo 17's mission with Cernan and Schmitt. I kept thinking about the utter joy that Neil must have felt being the first or even being on the moon. I honestly got slightly stirred up thinking about just having an experience like that. And then this happens. Rest in peace, sincerely.
"It suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn't feel like a giant. I felt very, very small."
Here's that great Apollo 17 recording:

Before finding out about this news, I was watching a Simpsons episode which had a flashback to Grandpa Simpson watching the moon landing, with Armstrong's famous one small step dialogue.
RIP Neil. Always to be remembered.
