i was just listening to the TWINE soundtrack while writing up some lecture notes and realised how GOOD is was compared to Madge's "die another day". i'm not dissing madonna here, she is GREAT, no question about it. its just..i don't know. i can see how the lyrics on psychoanalysis relate to the 2 sides of bond (bond/jinx, bond/graves), but it sounds so unlike a bond theme!
i heard DAD on the radio yesterday and noted the typically instrumental intro and wondered "hmm, whats this?" then it went all techno-y and i realised 'twas DAD, n felt a bit let down. with Goldeneye being v. sumptuous and sexy and TND (i feel) being given the indie touch by sheryl crowe, TWINE was perhaps more of a post-modern "goldfinger" (suitably bombastic strings and brass etc) combined with a funky rhythm. oh, and shirley mansun :)

all i can say is that i hope the titles themselves make up for the distinct lack of Bond in the titlesong.

ps. apologies if i seem to be voicing my opinions on DAD alot recently, i can explain! 1)am film student 2)am bond fan (the perfect combination!) and 3)seeing as theres the little matter of this being the 40th anniversary of the franchise, for some reason this Bond has to be one of the best - in other words, its gotta be good for the UK market. i tell ya, if peeps want it to be no1 in the charts, it should be released AFTER lotr!!

I like it. I think that the intro is really intriguing, and then it kind of falls apart when she starts singing. If it was slower then I'd love it. Overall though, the beat is AWESOME and with some better lyrics this could have been one of the best. Still, quite the trendsetter and theme...can't wait to see the title sequence.

I think the DAD song is very catchie. But on the down side, to have that kind of modern sound as it were, will only date the song much more.

The first time I heard it, I didn't like it, I might change my mind after I've listened to it a few more times.

I like the lyrics, although there aren't enough of them (too much repetition). I like the opening music (although it doesn't last long enough). I hate the effect put on Madonna's voice. I hate the background beats and zippy sound effects (distracting and silly).

I can't help but feel that this was a step in the wrong direction, and whilst I have no problem with Madonna, I think there should have been tighter control over her work (or at least she could have made the effort to produce something Bond-ish).

GoldenEye, TWINE and to a lesser extent TND were all notable and recognisable as Bond-songs. This just doesn't fit into the right category and I don't like hearing it.

The lyrics seem really random. I like the orchestra (totally agreeing with Double-O-Six -- the intro needs to be longer), the techno grows on you (after the thirtieth time listening to it, if you haven't deleted it by then!), Madonna is....er...well...a talented vocalist...and yet... enh. Somehow, this song just doesn't DO it for me like "A View to a Kill" did.

I guess it's good that they're departing from the shell of normal Bond songs and experimenting, but....MADONNA??!! And I thought that Sheryl Crow was a weird choice...

Not in any way dissing Madonna. She's quite talented... But, you don't expect a woman who was singing "Like A Virgin" 15 years ago to sing a Bond theme! (then again, you don't expect Garbage, Tina Turner, OR Sheryl Crow to do one either... Brosnan, on the whole, has had strange musicians do his title themes...)

I like it, I no longer love it as I originally had been saying. Its catchy, has a great beat, I think the lyrics are decent. But like Gladys Knight's Licence to Kill, the biggest downfall of Madonna's theme is repetition. After the first few beats, the song basically repeats itself over and over again.

I absolutely loathed it at first but its growing on me. Most of the recent themes always seem much better when they are combined with the title sequence it seems to me.

The full version is much better IMO. Mostly because there's more use of the strings/violin part. This is easily the best part of the song. Mixed with the techno beat, its really a unique invention of music. I have yet to see DaD so I'll judge tomorrow.

If the strings had been incorporated throughout the entire song, it would have been better. I still can't stand the song, i just don't find it bondish at all. The more i listen to the lyrics, the more i think they relate to madonna rather than bond. Thats just my opinion of course.

Let's be honest, there hasn't been a decent Bond title song since GoldenEye. TND was hardly memorable (should have gone for the k d lang closing song) and TWINE was at best forgettable but at least both are better than Madge's Minny Mouse effort.

I've got to say that when I firts heard the song I was amazed at just how poor it was. I was just about ready to hunt down Madonna like a fox and shoot her (as my friends will tell you).

However, after seeing how it was used in the film it has grown on me and I am listening to it now.

Still not a great fan of the "controversial" video though.

I have a theory that the song through it's use of music and distortion represents what we see on screen:

TORTURE

(Man if you had to listen to it for 14 months you'd tell all)

But to be honest, I agree with everyone else who stated that there should have been more orchestral elements to the song (I was hoping that the single release was just that, a single, and not representative of the song we would hear over the titles) and that David Arnold should have been allowed to score it.

But ho-hum, roll on Bond21 and Eon, please let David do ALL the music ...

Well, from my understanding, Arnold isn't quite happy about missing out on writing the theme...

I think it's ok, but boy are those lyrics lame, though the music is cool...that said, it's definately on the bottom of my Bond songs list....I just wish Don Black and David Arnold had been able to do the song for the anniversary...

Great song. Perfect for the title sequence. Very over-produced though. That's the song's downfall.

the lyrics are actually v pertinent to what actually happens, ya know with the 2 sides of bond (jinx/gaves). what i don't grasp is the "sigmund freud: analyze this!" i mean, the lyrics talk about destroying the ego, leaving the hedonistic id and ultra-moral superego to battle it out...hmm, could these also be the 2 sides to bond?

i hope you're referring to my song and not my (limited) grasp of freudian psychology? having not visited this particular thread until recently, i have just noticed a rather silly mistake! the id and superego cannot be the 2 sides to bond. Bond, if anything, is the id, as his (mainly sexual) desires seem to be rampant and therefore must be satisfied right now (and i think given the chance, he would have gone after "peaceful fountains of desire" right there and then!!). he certainly isn't the superego, as no one can ever be that, it's just too perfect. even Zao or Graves can't achieve that super moral position, no matter how megalomaniacal they may be, lol :)
what i meant by the remark was that it ties in nicely with Freud's personality theory and the 2 sides to every character. so there!!

I think it's okay. I think it was smart for EON to go with someone who's song wouldn't be ignorred (I mean, it's Madonna). I like the tune itself and the lyrics, and the orchestra is just great. It would have much better if they hadn't cut it up so much. Start, stop, start, stop while sing's singing.
