Ian Fleming died forty-eight years ago today. In the intervening years, there have been many fine writers of spy fiction, but none with the style, scope, or inventiveness of the man who gave us James Bond. Kingsley Amis' observation from 1965 remains equally true today:

"He leaves no heirs."

RIP Ian Fleming

And thank you.

It's a sad day for me as it's my grandfathers birthday today and was to be 80, but he passed away on Thursday night.

Thank you Ian Fleming for all that you have created. Your work will forever live on.

Sorry to hear your news Ace, that's an awful thing to have to cope with. My thoughts with you good sir.

And yes, I tip my hat to Ian Fleming for his creation of Commander James Bond and the many hours of pleasure, excitement and escapism that he has given to me and billions others with the novels and following films, books, games and other forms of Fleming's genius.

The man is an unparalleled writer and a real inspiration. His eye for painstaking detail and character craftsmanship are nothing short of brilliance.

Thanks for all the great reads Ian Fleming!

It certainly would have been preferable if Fleming had been around longer. On the other hand he doubtlessly was spared a lot. Well, he made the most of his time, which was his aim from the start, and he probably didn't dream how successful his work would turn out to be.

Wherever he is now, I trust he'll raise a glass with us.
