I kind of wish that THUNDERBALL, and not GOLDFINGER, were the Bond movie thought of as "the one", the default "go to" Bond movie, by the general public. In a way, it should be, but I also get why it isn't.

Yeah I agree, Thunderball is a really good Bond film. I mean GF is pretty good too, but I feel like it lacks a little bit in something compared to Thunderball.
