How could anyone watch that new trailer and still worry that Skyfall will be 'bad'?

Bond is back big time, with a bleach-blonde villain and a signature gun.

Roll on November!

Well said.

I couldn't agree more. Yet, on the other hand, I thought the same thing about Prometheus and The Dark Knight Rises, so this thread did at least strike a nerve... ;)

With all due respect gentlemen, I believe Skyfall will be Bond's finest hour.

I won't go as far as to predict that Skyfall will be Bonds all time finest hour, but I firmly believe that we're getting a film that is as good as Casino Royale (which was the best Bond since 1969).

The one thing lacking so far in my mind with both Casino Royale and Quantum Of Solace is a truly epic bad guy on the level of Goldfinger et al., I'm really hoping this Silva character delivers. Certainly he's not the visual I was expecting so far, but wow, what a crocodile smile.

And Mallory seems quite... creepy. Hmmm... :)

In my opinion both CR and QoS didn't have clear Main Villain - CR had Le Chiffre, Mr White and Obanno. QoS had also three villains - Greene, Medrano and Mr White. I think that Silva is the sole villainous mastermind in Skyfall. He does remind me of Scaramanga/Sanchez with a hint of Zorin.

If anyone comes out of the theatre still convinced that Skyfall is 'bad', then the fault will lie with that viewer's expectations, and not with the film itself.

Mallory has been touted as the "M" in waiting. And he may be. But could he be a wrong 'un within MI6? Quite possible.

I think the Mallory character could turn out to be either (1) the next "M", but this assumes that Skyfall is Dame Judi Dench's swansong, and that Ralph Fiennes would commit to a recurring role, (2) a one off character, on the side of the angels but giving "M" a hard time, or, (3) a villain within MI6 - working for Raoul Silva, or as an equal partner in crime, or using Silva for his own ends. (Such as, say, using the situation to replace "M" with himself as head of MI6? I considered this, but it would be a pretty extreme example of "office politics"!)

Either way, intriguing.

Like Voldermort in Harry Potter? Hades in Clash and Wrath of the Titans? He doesn't seem to have a problem with recurring roles.

I agree that after the trailers, there is no way 'Skyfall' could be seen as bad, I am willing to bet on it.

There was nothing fluffy, cheesy, tacky, over-the-top or anything boring in that trailer to make me have any doubts.

I don't quite think the theory of him being the new M holds up, he's already described as being M's boss, why would he take a step down to replace her? Of course, him being a villain hiding right at the top of Mi-6 seems like a plot thread from the Quantum storyline, who is apparently not in this film. Only thing bugging me is Mallory being a traitor almost seems too... obvious.

Interesting to note: Far as I can tell from my (admittedly not necessarily perfect) research, rights to all the Fleming novels are now back in the hands of Eon, including Thunderball. Hmmm...

There's a number of points in the new trailers that leads me to believe Silva has someone on his side in Mi-6.

Plus he's a huge Bond fan. Has it been officially confirmed that Mallory holds a superior position to M in MI6? He might be someone from the Ministry of Defence who has been given the task to correct fellow official, someone working across the board. So yes, I have a hunch that Mallory is new-M-in-making,

Hmmm. Well, on the Skyfall wikipedia page, it says 'a government agent with the authority to regulate MI6'. I'd thought I'd read that he was M's superior but I may have no idea what I'm talking about...?

Doesn't he seem kind of... sinister, for a person about to become the new M in the trailer...? Maybe I'm reading in to it too much.

Remember Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, so we don't know who added that particular nugget of info - could be an insider, could be a fan like us.

I don't find him particularly sinister in the trailer - maybe some have subconcious Amon Goeth/Dolarhyde/Voldemort association? I could be wrong of course and we won't know for sure until October.

In my opinion he'd be a wonderful M and I would have preferred him to be Bond instead of Brosnan in the 90's.

Fiennes is always top noch. One of my favourite actors and a fellow Bond an T.E.Lawerence admirer. His portrayal of Count Laszlo de Almásy is phenomenal. Can´t wait to see more of him in Skyfall. I get the feeling they´re bonding and forming a relationship based on respect, him and Bond.

I agree.Though it could be just the way that trailer is cut, I do think that wink is some indication. I am highly excited to Fiennes' reaction to it. I hope it will not be one of bewilderment but one of understanding.

EDIT: Can someone correct me if I am wrong but doesn't Bond wink at Fiennes in one of the trailers or am I on the hard stuff?

I think Bond was just briefly closing his left eye to line up his sights, as he had his signature PPK extended at the time.

I could be wrong, but I tend to think of logical reasons for things, rather that the most outrageous and unlikely (although that tendency let me down in the leadup days to Moonraker).

He was definitely lining up his sights but it also looked like a purposeful wink to me at the same time, seems to me there was a reason they included it in the trailer, 'course who knows?

I still think there's something weasely and menacing about Mallory but it may just be me and a healthy dose of wishful thinking. ;) I for one, really really will miss Judy Dench if she's exiting in whatever form it takes, I think she is the perfect M for Craig's Bond, and really makes his character work in ways it wouldn't otherwise. Having a male 'M' at this point just seems like too much of a whiff of the boy's club for the Craig era. But I trust whatever they've got up their sleeves for this one are good decisions and not half baked like some of the ones in Quantum Of Solace. Personally I'd rather see Albert Finney take over the role of 'M' rather than Fiennes, and I loves me the Fiennes, don't get me wrong.

Curious if Dench is indeed getting replaced whether it was the writer's idea first or whether she said, 'I'm retiring. Write me out in this one.'...? I wonder if the scene they cut from the ending of QoS originally meant they had ideas for the 3rd movie that still got used, but got rewritten as a standalone...?

If Skyfall comes up short of expectations, it will most likely be with those of us who post on a 007 nerd board. If I had to venture a guess, I'd say the vast majority of movie patrons probably don't have anywhere near the emotional investment in the franchise that we do. It will do fine out there. Craig and the franchise post-Brosnan are very highly regarded as a much needed refocusing of 007. I don't see that going away any time soon, even if Skyfall doesn't measure up toCasino Royale. To a lot of people, myself included, Quantum wasn't on par with Casino Royale and it didn't hurt anything. Craig & #24 are in no danger.

Agreed. The average movie goer loved Brosnan and loved Casino Royale too.

Also, I still hear friends and colleagues say "I love the last Bond movie, Casino Royale". That gives you an idea of the depth of their Bond knowledge.
