The article is a treat to read. In particular, I enjoyed Duns' observation that "what captivated me about the books was Fleming's prose style, which is extremely vivid and often packed with fascinating information." Yes indeed.

I enjoy Fleming's yarns, but even when some of the plotting wears a bit thin, the writing enchants. Many writers create books with lots of chases, shooting, high-tech gadgetry, and outsize villains. What makes the Bond books stand out, however, is the way in which the stories are told, drawing us in to the hero's world in a way that few other writers can match. Back in the 1960's, literary critics sometimes asked why Fleming's books were so popular. I believe that Duns has provided a significant part of the answer.

Thank you! I agree, I think you capture it perfectly when you say that Fleming's "writing enchants." I also have that experience, where I'm transfixed by Fleming's tone and by the way that he paces his sentences. This may sound funny, but I even hear Whitfield's voice (the narrator of the audio books) in my head when I read now. There is something about the calm way he reads, taking his time- he seems to savor the words, and that really resonates with me. Does anyone have a similar experience?
