Whitney Houston has passed away, her publicist has said.

The AP reports that Kristen Foster has confirmed that the singer died on Saturday (February 11). No further details have been announced.

The hugely successful recording artist had been expected to make an appearance at Clive Davi's pre-Grammy gala in Los Angeles tonight.

A source close to Davis, who launched Houston's career at Arista Records, told The Hollywood Reporter: "This is a sad day and it will be a sad Grammys weekend."

More soon.

Very shocked and saddened by Whitney's passing..Unfortunately, like Amy Winehouse, I always feared things would end up this way for Whitney. She had incredible talent and a tremendous voice (hmm..in her prime she could have pulled off a GREAT Bond theme, IMO). Her debut album and The Bodyguard is still in HEAVY rotation on my iPod. However, sadly things went VERY amiss for her the day she met that joke of a Bobby Brown and turned her into a huge drug addict.. Sad.. R.I.P. Whitney..

Absolutely left-field and shocking.

Really?

I agree that it's very sad, but not really at all surprising when you consider her personal history.

My wife's devastated.

It's a great shame that WH never did a Bond tune - would have been a belter!

Wasn't a huge fan (although any song from the dancier end of her repertoire is always a good spin in nightclubs), but it's certainly pretty sad that the two most commercially groundbreaking black artists of a generation are now dead.

Hear that sound? That's the sound of a thousand hipsters rushing to their copies of American Psycho, ready to type.

Very sad. She had such a great voice, I always enjoyed her songs, and while I would've posted this under the NFL topic, her singing the National Anthem at Super Bowl XXV was IMO the best I've ever heard it performed. After 21 years it holds up to time, it is the most stirring & emotional vocal performance I have seen-and nobody has come close to doing it as well as she did. While her personal issues were well known, I hope she found her peace near the end. RIP Whitney Houston
