I know there has been much said about the lack of edge with Deaver's Bond, but what continued to strike me was how little style his Bond had.

I mean, he used a Blackberry holster on his belt? Hell, I.T. guys at my company mock guys on their team that do that.

The clothes he described sounded like something Deaver would wear as opposed to Bond and using a Subaru as the go to high performance vehicle was simply dull.

1. He used a modified iPhone, not a BlackBerry. 2. He didn't have a holster for it on his belt. If I'm wrong, can you provide a page number?

Bond used the Subaru in the field so you can't judge him. Don't forget, his personal car was a Bentley. I'm not a big fan of the Bentley but at least it exudes class.

I remember Bond in OHMSS renting a Simca Aronde, fairly common low-key car at the time. Well, today even Bentleys are Volkswagens, aren't they? Might as well criticise the Continental on that basis.

I guess if I took the time to scroll through a novel to find an exact reference, it would mean I have less important things to do in my life to increase my posts.

Anyway, the inside of a sports coat or suit jacket is perfect for a smartphone.

Really? A thread based upon "style" forwarding a case for his phone and a rented car? It's not like he could have taken the Bently with him or driven it to Africa considering the book took place over a very short period.

I smell someone trying to find something something to dislike and finding the flimsiest of reasons.

During the second half of DN Bond wears a polo shirt and canvas slacks, or in the book jeans IIRC. That's sensible attire for the occasion. Deaver's decisions there aren't a problem I think. The Oakley name-dropping would not have been necessary, looks a bit too gangsta-stylish for Bond. But the rest I suppose is OK.

There were numerous references to "rounds" in Fleming's writing, but "bullet" was not an unknown term. In the span of a page or two of Diamonds Are Forever, we find: "Now she was safe from flying bullets . . . the bullet buried itself into the bed . . . The quiet bullet and the quiet knife crossed in mid-air" (DAF, chapter 24), and there's that vivid picture of Frasso's gun pumping "bullets into the ceiling" (DAF, chapter 19). These aren't the only examples. Fleming seems to have used "round" when writing technically, but "bullet" for dramataic effect.

Sure. Or in his pocket, between his teeth, on top of his head, between his legs. ANYTHING but a holster. Only people utterly devoid of style carry a mobile phone in a holster on their belt. It's the style of overweight sales reps with over sized bluetooth headsets permanently lodged in their ears and embarrassing dad types. It is certainly not something James Bond would be caught dead doing.

It is rather practical though.
