I've been a FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE lover for years, so no sense giving up! I absolutely love it. It's also the only pre-Brosnan Bond I've had the pleasure of seeing on the big screen (and thanks to my wife for enjoying that experience with me). Glad to see OHMSS getting lots of admiration here, as it's very close behind FRWL on my list.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE is the best. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS and CASINO ROYALE are tied for a close second, with FOR YOUR EYES ONLY completing the podium.

I know the thread specifically asks for one example, but I find these four films to be so good that they are virtually inseparable, and the order that I rank them has been known to change on an hourly basis. I call them the "Cold War Quartet" (even though CASINO ROYALE is not set during the Cold War), and I like them because of the twenty-two films in the franchise, these four have the most emphasis on espionage rather than Bond being an assassin.

To save this thread becoming a simple (read: boring) thread of lists, perhaps more people could say why a film is their favourite?

My favourite is [i]Goldfinger[i]. When I first saw it I thought it was slow, plodding and a little boring. I never understood why it was always lauded as THE best Bond film. Well after watching it many times since that first viewing I have done a complete u-turn.

I love it for so many reasons: Connery's most comfortable performance, the DB5, the banter with M, Honor Blackman (a proper actress rather than a dubbed mannequin) whith whom Connery has some great moments, the hilariously un-P.C. moments (mainly involving Dink), the great score and my favourite pre-credits sequence in the series. Not to mention some of the best one-liners.

It is certainly extravagant what with its bowler hat throwing Korean Butler, golden corpse, provocatively named Bond girl and attack on Fort Knox but that's what I like about it. As much as FRWL, for example, is an utterly fantastic film, I love Goldfinger because its just more fun without going to the Nth degree (like DAF or MR).

It is a toss up for me. I have regarded FRWL as the Best Bond Movie for many decades until CR gave it a run for its money.

Thunderball. It's the ultimate Bond film and Sean Connery's performance is probably the "coolest" ever put on screen.
But FRWL, OHMSS and CR are close followers.

Why From Russia With Love? Casting Lotte Leyna as Rosa Klebb was absolutely perfect. I can't read the book now without seeing her. Likewise, Robert Shaw playing Donald Grant is another masterstroke. That's one of the movie's defining qualities - best casting for a Bond film. Only Daniela Bianchi felt out of place, due to her obvious inexperience. Few Bond movies can match the fight on the train between Shaw and Connery. Later Bond films manipulated the audience's interests through sight gags, explosions, or gadgetry, but this movie generates real suspense and tension that's practically Hitchcockian at certain moments.

... of which my favorite chapter is GoldenEye. It was the second Bond film I ever saw, and I still find it to be the most balanced, the most entertaining, the most rewatchable, the most fun, the most self-aware, the most interesting, the least cringe-inducing. I won't say it's the best Bond film, but it's the one I most often feel like watching. About once a month. It can't be mere nostalgia, because the first Bond movie I saw was TND, and I never feel like watching that.

Nicely summed up. I'm a fan of many Bond movies, but FRWL, a film I first saw in 1965, has always been my favorite.

It has always been between 'Royale' and 'Thunderball.' The problem is, I might as well be comparing apples and oranges. Both are juicy and delicious. This will need years of contemplation.
