I've started to realize just how much of an influence "Casino Royale" had on the movies to follow, whether consciously or subconsciously. Here's are the similarities I've noticed so far.... (Of course, you can take these with a grain of salt, I just thought this might be amusing!)

* "Casino Royale" specifically mentions that James Bond is a mere codename (and in fact, Sir James hates his current namesake - Sean Connery's Bond!). This controversial theory has been toyed with by EON ever since Connery left. 'The other feller,' Brosnan's Bond being born in the Sixties, Craig becoming 007 in 2006, etcetera. (In fact, an unfilmed Die Another Day scene would've confirmed this completely, by having Brosnan meet Connery.)

* Angela Scoular plays Buttercup, supposedly one of McTarry's daughters. Two years later, Angela Scoular would play Ruby Bartlett in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service."

* Caroline Munro plays one of Dr. Noah's gun-toting women. Ten years later, she would play Naomi in "The Spy Who Loved Me."

* The scene in Q's laboratory is very different from the Connery/Q scenes of the time - a lot of slapstick, silly sound effects, and ridiculous things going on the background. From Roger's era onward, however, the Q scenes would be exactly like this.

* Q has created a poison-dispensing pen, prompting Tremble to joke about writing a "poison pen letter." This exact same joke would appear in Octopussy, sixteen years later.

* Q gives Tremble a new wristwatch with a built-in video screen. In Octopussy, Bond receives the same gadget.

* Another Octopussy one! Both Sir James and Moore's Bond mistake M's new, younger secretary for Moneypenny, and comment on her ability to remain attractive, before being corrected.

* During the baccarat game, Tremble offers a strange Asian proverb. Connery's Bond also quotes an Asian proverb in "You Only Live Twice," which was in production right next door! (Both Bonds attempt to say it with a foreign accent, and both end up sounding quite silly. Except Connery's wasn't intentional!)

* EON's own 'Casino Royale' has Bond being told that if he gets into trouble, he shouldn't expect the calvary to ride in and save him. This is almost certainly a reference to the ending of the 1967 version. (Thanks to IMDB for this one!)

* Jimmy Bond is tricked into swallowing a pill that blows him up. Six years later, Bond gives the same treatment to Kananga - who, this time, quite literally blows up!

* The concept of a middle-aged Bond and his departure from the Service would later be revisited in "Never Say Never Again." (I know, not EON, but it's still a similarity.)

* When the dignitaries meet with Sir James, they inform him of SMERSH's operation to wipe out spies worldwide... 'smiert spionam', of course. Two decades later, this plot would form the basis of "The Living Daylights."

* Sir James joins his enemies in a grouse shoot, just as he would do twelve years later in "Moonraker."

* Though not quite the same situation, the idea of the villain creating doubles would reappear in "Diamonds Are Forever."

* Much of Mata Bond's story takes place in Berlin - as does a portion of "Octopussy."

* Jimmy Bond escapes a firing squad only to find himself right back in danger, as Brosnan's Bond does in the PTS of "Die Another Day."

* Jimmy Bond is equipped with deadly cigarettes, as is Connery's Bond in "You Only Live Twice." (Yes, I realize all the YOLT ones on this list would have to be coincidences.)

* Burt Kwouk, who already appeared in "Goldfinger," returns in "Casino Royale"... as well as "You Only Live Twice," filmed at the same time on the same studio lot. (suggested by AMC Hornet)

* Evelyn Tremble is killed by Vesper, who carries a set of bagpipes that double as a machine gun. An identical weapon later appears in "The World Is Not Enough." (suggested by AMC Hornet)

* Agent Mimi and her female cohorts base their Bond-corrupting operations around a Scottish castle, the former McTarry reference. In "The World Is Not Enough," a Scottish castle would serve as a temporary HQ for MI6. (suggested by PrinceKamalKhan)

* "Casino Royale" would introduce the concept of out-of-place, recognizable music as comedy to the Bond series. "Born Free" and "What's New, Pussycat" appear in this film; the themes from "The Magnificent Seven" and "Close Encounters" appear in Moonraker, and "California Girls" appears in A View To A Kill. (suggested by AMC Hornet)

* As Dr. Noah, Jimmy Bond sports a Chairman Mao jacket - identical to the outfit worn by Blofeld in "You Only Live Twice." (suggested by AMC Hornet)

* After co-writing a handful of songs for "Casino Royale," Hal David would write songs for both "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" and "Moonraker." (suggested by Napoleon Solo)

* Tremble drove a Lotus Formula Three, while Roger Moore's trademark car was a Lotus Esprit. (Hee hee.)

* The theme from "Casino Royale" was performed by Herb Alpert. The theme from "Never Say Never Again" was performed by Lani Hall, the wife of Herb Alpert.

HONORABLE MENTION! * One unfilmed Sellers scene had Tremble and Vesper in a circus. This would have been another "Octopussy" similarity if it had been included.

HONORABLE MENTION! * Actually, just an odd coincidence. A major factor in Sellers' bad behavior (and his departure from the movie) was the marital strife he experienced with Britt Ekland - the future Mary Goodnight.

Can anyone think of more?

Yeah. Niv played Bond as a prissy-arsed Englishman, clearly paving the way for Roger Moore. Obviously, Cubby and Harry saw this and realised the way forward for Bond was as a poncy more English-than-English type.

Do ya think? ;)

Woody Allen in a Mao jacket - identical to Donald Pleasance's costume in YOLT.

This could have been a coincidence, as both movies were filming at the same time, and what was more insidious in the 1960s than the godless, insane red Chinese?

Speaking of which, Burt Kwouk must have gone right from one sound stage to the other to film his two roles.

The 'poison pen' reference hadn't escaped me, but I doubt it was deliberate (Cubby would not have sought - or consciously agreed - to raid CR '67 for any elements). The machine gun in a bagpipes in TWINE, however, makes me wonder...

Mary Goodnight had not appeared yet, but 'Jackie' Bissett played the treacherous Miss Goodthighs. If pressed, I'm sure MGW would insist that the name Holly Goodhead was inspired by the former, not the latter.

Then there was having snatches of music from other movies playing on the soundtrack (eg: John Barry's Born Free and Burt Bacharach's own What's New, Pussycat?, which also starred Peter Sellers, Woody Allen, Ursula Andress and Peter O'Toole). Apparently Lewis Gilbert wanted to play There'll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight as Blofeld blows up the volcano base, but (fortunately) he was overruled. He would get his way later, though...

There is something about having Judy Dench as M in CR 06, however, that (in my mind) harkens back to the 'code name theory' as outlined by Sir James in 1967 - unless she's supposed to be playing an alternate-universe version of the same character? A long-time government mandarin who misses the cold war, and who never called one of her agents a "relic of the cold war" back in '95?

BTW, why was Mata Bond only 20 years old in 1967, when her mother was executed in 1917? Are we to believe that Mata Hari was also an alternate-universe character who survived WWI?

Excellent post, TheLazenby! I would add the scenes of Sir James Bond visiting M's widow Mimi and her double agent daughters at the Scottish castle foreshadowed MI6 using a Scottish castle as temporary HQ in The World is not Enough.

Hal David, helping to write the songs in Casino Royale, then gets hired for On Her Majesty's Secret Service two years later, and Moonraker ten years after that.

Yeah, I always sort of accepted Judi playing M to both Brosnan and Craig (not to mention the whole 'reboot' idea) as EON saying "Yeah, alright, it's not the same guy. Let's just move on."

The Mata Hari thing has always puzzled people... but think of it like this, Sir James calls Mata 'the very image of her mother.' Joanna Pettet bears ABSOLUTELY no resemblance to the actual Mata Hari. Who's to say it was the historical figure of that name? Perhaps it was just the nickname of another female spy who shared the *real* Mata Hari's dancing skills?

Ah, and Burt Kwouk - I completely forgot about him! (I did consider the 'Holly Goodhead' link, though; I didn't consider the Goodthighs/Goodnight connection, because Mary had already appeared in Fleming's novels.)

One more point about Octopussy, that I wanted to include but couldn't remember specific facts about - Mata Hari's school is located between East and West Berlin. Isn't that where Checkpoint Charlie was, where a portion of OP was filmed?

(Oh, incidentally, I'll keep adding new ones to the bottom of the list as I think of them. Just added a couple now. :-))
