Great find, thanks for the info. Didn't know about that side of the business, most intriguing how this relates to the entire industry.

Economics is going to trump artistry. Costs have to be kept down and this is why even Bond is going digital.

Not true. If the makers of some TV series can afford to shoot with 35 mm film for TV, than a big budget movie like Bond 23 can do it too. The reason Bond 23 will be shot with digaital cameras is simply because the cinematographer Roger Deakins chose to use the digital Arri Alexa cameras.

Exactly.

Roger Deakins has talked extensively as to why he's using the Alexa and it's nothing to do with cost cutting.

Here's another article with a slightly more positive outlook. Don't let the title fool you.

Do camera manufacturers believe film will disappear? "Eventually it will," says ARRI's Russell. "In two or three years, it could be 85 percent digital and 15 percent film. But the date of the complete disappearance of film? No one knows."

From Radin's point of view, the question of when film will die, "Can only be answered by Kodak and Fuji. Film will be around as long as Kodak and Fuji believe they can make money at it," he says.

Point taken. I am curious to see what shooting options future Bond cinematographers use for Bond 24 and beyond.

A nice, in depth interview here with the man himself. He discusses some topics of interest, such as why he shoots digitally, working with Sam Mendes, and how important he finds the script in getting him interested in a project:

I love the man's work, and from this interview he seems like a intelligent, down to earth, likeable chap. I am very excited that a man of his talent is on board for Bond 23.

Guess I'll be seeing this in Digital IMAX. Thanks!
