Anyway, should get one running for this year for myself, silent as I've been of late. Think I'll start throwing on previously-unseen DVD ventures as well, instead of just cinema trips.

True Grit (2011)
Ever since playing Red Dead Redemption, I've began to find Western movies very interesting. So, when I first heard about this film, It was definitely a must see for me. It didn't disappoint in the slightest. I haven't seen the original movie, so I can't compare, but for what it is, this film is outstanding. Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon give excellent performances, and I'm usually not keen on Damon. The storyline is brilliant, and very atmospheric. A lovely, character driven film. There's some very touching scenes, which don't feel forced in the slightest. The Coen Brothers certainly know how to draw out some lovely performances, and I honestly wouldn't mind them working on a Bond film. Oh, and speaking of Bond, the cinematography in this was brilliant. Can't wait to see what Deakins will bring to Bond 23.

Overall, a fantastic film. Highly recommended.

Black Swan
A visually stunning and brilliantly crafted thriller. Albeit a little unintentionally hilarious at times. Natalie Portman is fantastic, as is the rest of the cast. Darren Aronofsky's sense of direction is beautiful, as is the cinematography. I can see why this was critically acclaimed, because it's probably one, if not the best film I've seen this year. So far, 2011, is a BRILLIANT place for movies.

:****.:

The Tourist
An average, but entertaining film. Nothing more nothing less. It's good for what it is: A way to pass an afternoon whist watching wooden performances by A-List Celebs. Nothing in this film works. It's just... so average. Started off alright, but rapidly went down hill as it progressed.

The Kings Speech

What a totally beautiful film. One of the best I've seen this year, without a doubt. I don't usually say this, but I feel that this movie deserved the hype. It's utterly fantastic. Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush have amazing chemistry, and Helena Bonham Carter shines in probably the best performance of her career. Overall a fantastic and stunning piece of cinema.

Scream 4
Entertaining, stupid and fun will be the best way to describe this. I wasn't expecting much, so I wasn't disappointed. I love how they made it postmodern, and made it all about the internet, which was a good move. The film didn't take itself too seriously, and I found it brilliantly entertaining. It's not as good as the first one, but better than 2 and 3. I loved the references to Saw, and Shaun of the Dead, and Don't Look Now. I just felt that some stuff was really stupid. The scene with the two cops especially.

Also, massive spoiler...
Spoiler

Overall though, a strong effort, and a massive step up from the last one.

The Hangover - Part Two
A complete and utter rehash of the first. Still thoroughly enjoyable, though. Some genuinely funny moments throughout and some solid performances. No better or no worse than the first one, just on par I would say.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part Two (SPOILERS)

After so many years of being a Potter fan, reading the books and watching the movies, I thought it would be appropriate to attend a midnight screening for the final chapter. Clocking in at just over 2 hours, Hallows Part Two is by far one of the strongest of the series. Growing up with Potter and watching Radcliffe, Grint and Watson on the screen for 10 years really has given me an emotional bond to this movie series, that won't go away, even though I find their performances irritating in places, and have done since the start of the series, I just can't not enjoy it.

Without a doubt though, in my eyes, Alan Rickman completely steals the show in this one. I've loved Snape ever since the start, and he has become my favourite character in the series, and seeing everything happen last night really makes me appreciate him a lot more as an actor. He is brilliant, and I couldn't stop myself from getting rather emotional at 'The Princes Tale'. Perfectly acted, and performed.

The Battle of Hogwarts is indeed a brilliant sequence, taking up most of the movie. It was fantastic to witness really. Seeing many of our favourite characters fight, and in some cases, die, really did give me goosebumps. Although, bar
Spoiler
I felt some of the deaths didn't have that much of an emotional impact, most happened off screen which didn't really help matters. It was nice to see Maggie Smith in place, and it was brilliant to see McGonnagle in combat. Although, I have to say that it would've been nice to see more of the other supporting cast have their moments to shine. It was a shame Slughorn, Hagrid and pretty much the rest of the staff were given smaller roles, I felt it would've added to the urgency of the situation if we saw these characters spill blood and locked in battle, rather than confined to the background.

Another issue I have with this movie, and it's minor, but I really felt that Harry should be a little more pissed off at Dumbledore and his actions, and as Snape likened them to be 'raising Harry like a pig to slaughter', I thought some anger really was needed by Harry here.

The epilogue was handled perfectly and you have no idea how much of a smile came on my face when I heard John Williams' 'Reunion of Friends' used for the first time in 9 years. I really wanted them to use this and I was so glad they did. A brilliant send off to an entertaining movie series!

Tron - Worth it for the FX (and the Vancouver bits) even if the story was a bit squiffy.
Green Hornet - Good bit of fun, not deserving of the bad reviews it recieved
The Mechanic - Guns, Violence and Pecs: You know what to expect from a movie with The Stath
The Eagle - Decent, but could have been much better, Douglas Henshall must've been pissed he almost got edited out of the movie after a fairly hefty role for the character in the book
I Am Number Four - A good bit of fun, Pettyfer might not be able to act but the FX make up for that
Source Code - One of the better movies of the year, so far, for me - intelligent and thought provoking.
Kings Speech - Disappointing, didn't deserve the accolades people heaped on it.
Scream 4 - A fun piece of fluff, a worthy continuation/reinvention of the series.
Thor - Hemsorth. Pecs. Biceps. 'Nuff said.
X-men: First Class - The best X-Men film, bar none, imho. Can't wait for the inevitably titled 'Uncanny X-Men' follow-up, my money is on them bringing in either Karma and Polaris and somehow tieing in the space program and the Vietnam War.
Captain America - We're going to Manhatta - no, wait, that's Manchester. Same as Thor - Evans, Pecs, Biceps. Saw this before work one day, up there with Source Code as my favourite movie of the year so far.

To See:

Cowboys and Aliens
The Inbetweeners
Sherlock Holmes 2
Mission Impossible 4
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The Inbetweeners Movie

A great send off to a rather good and entertaining TV Series. Saying that though, I felt that it didn't really have any type of finality in the least. It had a beginning, a middle, and no end. It finished too suddenly. Which took me by surprise. I was expecting a goodbye scene with a voiceover from Will, it kind of just had an abrupt end.

I loved what I saw though, full of laughs and full of great performances, especially from James Buckley, who I feel is a really, really good actor in places. I think this boy will go very far indeed.

Cowboys & Aliens
Now, ever since I saw this film advertised, even from the first trailers, I knew that it wouldn't be a masterpiece, merely a few hours of entertainment. It's pretty weird that I still came out of this feeling disappointed. Now, Daniel Craig is absolutely brilliant in this, totally awesome, as is Ford. The film itself starts off great, the first 45 minutes or so are fantastic, as is the first big action sequence. Just after that scene, I turned to one of my friends and said "This is pretty sweet, for a summer blockbuster." He replied with, "For now!", which was rather odd, considering the moment he said that, the film just started to go downhill. It's an entertaining film, don't get me wrong, but my god, it's so inconsistent. I'll put this in spoiler tags for those who haven't caught it yet..

Spoiler

It's an alright film, just not that great, and rather predictable. Great CGI though, and brilliant action sequences.

X-Men First Class

Dreadful and soulless film. Awfully boring and unevenful. I hate this origin crap. It's been done to death. Never really liked Xmen anyway. I knew I wouldn't like it, dunno why I even bothered. Fassbender was good though, and the soundtrack. Kind of get where the Bond discussion is coming from. I expected a lot more from Matthew Vaughn.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Average film. Entertaining in places but mostly boring. 3 times it could've ended, it had to go on for longer. Penelope Cruz is awful and Johnny Depp reminds me of Russell Brand. Music is good though, and the Judi Denchs' cleavage is quite satisfying. ;)

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy
A very fine film indeed, although I really did struggle understanding it at some points. Some parts drag on a bit, but other than that, it was brilliant! Magnificent performances, and great cinematography.
