Okay, it's on!

"Do you expect me to talk?"

"No Mr. Bond I expect you to call heads or tails!"

Do you think a win at the Oscars will affect his decision one way or the other?

If they could secure Bardem, that would be one hell of a coup. Imagine him doing his full on crazed nut routine. Intimidating and frightening everybody around him. Yeah, sounds like a worthy Bond villain. Fingers crossed.

I hope he takes the job, I would love to see Bardem vs. Craig.

I'm also hoping that Mendes brings Roger Deakins on as cinematographer. If both happen, No Country for Old Men reunion on Bond 23.

I hope this is true and I really really hope he accepts it, Barden is a formidable actor. Now, if his wife wasn´t in Pirates...one could wish. If Barden does accept the role, I wonder if he´ll be playing a spanish villain, about time we had a Bond film set in Iberia again. So we could have Craig, Dench and Barden in a Sam Mendes Bond film...wouldn´t see that coming circa 2003;)

Yes, it would be nice to have a movie set in Spain or Portugal again, why not Lisbon or Barcelona? And, about Bardem, what an excellent rumour, I for one hope it´s true.

As I said, I think we can consider this more than just rumor. Deadline is spot on 99% of the time.

I like the idea of Javier Bardem as a Bond villain very much. Bond in Spain is also a great idea. I do harbor a desire that we get to see 007 in Japan again while Craig is in the role.

Great news. I hope he does decide to sign up for Bond 23. He would just add a lot and especially could give us a great Bond villain.

I should have put the money on that one a while back*. Could have made a few quid.

So, Bond 23 may well have its Senor Risico.

Who is Senor Risico?

I do think Bardem as a bond villain would make the film much stronger. I have said a few times bond needs a creepy villain.

I wonder whether the makers of the Bond franchise have enough courage to make a film that focuses just as much on the villain as on Bond, because it's never happened before. If so, BOND 23 could truly be something special.

One of the main reasons that DIE HARD is an interesting film is that it's just as much about Hans Gruber and what he wants as it is about John McClane fighting terrorists and saving his marriage in the process. And look at THE DARK KNIGHT: Batman/Bruce Wayne is really only the third most developed and interesting character in the film, after the Joker and Harvey Dent. But the greater focus on the villains doesn't unbalance those films - it's what makes them work so well.

Will Bardem's bad guy (and I suspect he'll be playing the head of Quantum) be as well-written and engaging as Hans Gruber or the Joker? Will he and Craig get equal screentime and importance and strike sparks off each other like De Niro and Pacino in HEAT? I hope so.

Or will he be wasted in what is basically a glorified supporting role, as with Mads Mikkelsen and Matthieu Amalric? Will the film's focus stay largely on Bond, as usual? Will Eon allow Bardem to steal the show, or will they put him in his place? Will Eon take the bold step of hiring an actor of Bardem's calibre and charisma and then proceed to play it safe?

well if this is true I guess there is No Country for Old 007...

As of right now this news is interesting but not exciting it won't be exciting till Javier joins the cast if in fact does.

They must be keen to get him if they're going after him this early in the game.

I would imagine Bardem doesn't do films for career's sake (in as much as he needs to be careful). He has got to his standing over a lot of years work. I remember seeing films of his 15 years back. It's the same with most actors of his calibre - is the gig going to be fun, do-able, mildly interesting, fit in with the demanding role he needs to jump onto immediately after? It wouldn't kill his career as he doesn't need Bond. And he is no doubt a great ambassador for the Spanish film groups and would no doubt help move things along with some of the clearance to shoot in Spain - something which makes it all the more of a package for him and Mrs Bardem (??!!).

I doubt, he would beable to STEAL the show, but it certainly would be interesting to see them battle - physically and mentally, with mentally being the more exciting option to watch probably. They wouldn't think of hiring him, if they thought there is danger of DC NOT holding his own against him. Au contraire - with having someone like DC, they can RISK of putting up some serious talent against him.

Agreed, Germanlady. Well said.

Probably, or at least if he were given the chance to play the Bond series' first ever truly well-written and fleshed-out villain with comparable screentime to 007.

This strikes me as a bit like Tom Hardy signing up to play the bad guy in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES - more than just yer usual villainous role in just yer usual action franchise sequel. Something that's relatively meaty and prestigious. Or at least I hope so.

It would be nice to see a Bond set and shot in Valencia, with Calatrava's architecture, and what not.

Agreed, Bardem is more then capable of pulling of a great Bond villain. The question is will the script have one in it? Either way it would be great to see him in a Bond film, he is capable of taking his characters to such a wide array of emotions. Finally I wouldn't mind if he kidnapped M, that could be an acting master class.

This drama queen will feel right at home.

And the idea of some tense drama scenes between Bardem, Dench & Craig got me so excited that I cannot stop biting my nails here!

Interesting development. Obviously the head of Quantum is going to be a little "ticked" following the results of QoS. Who better to play an out of control - full force villain with revenge at the core of his whole being than Javier Bardem? The comparison to Heath Ledger's Joker may be more on spot than you think!

I love the casting but I don't want him to play Anton Chigurh. That'd be...boring. And I don't expect it either.

I'd like his character to be very suave and cool, like an evil Spanish Bond who can also handle himself in a fight.

It helps that Bardem created one of the very best villains of the entire decade; while it obviously wouldn't do for him to play that exact type of character again (he certainly won't), we know he has the intensity and the creativity to really make an intimidating villain. A villain who doesn't rely on the henchman, who doesn't hide behind smooth words or grandiose gestures, who doesn't have a secret debilitating weakness. It worked for Mads' and Amalric's characters to be weak on the inside, but this is the first opportunity EON has had in many years to have a Largo, a Sanchez, a Grant. Exciting times ahead.

BTW I posted him as a recommendation right after I got back from watching No Country for old men in theaters a couple years back, great choice! Also I think a great henchman slash baddie would be Forest Whittaker, Oscar winner, Imposing figure plus hes got that weird lazy eye going for him. I also think Vincent Cassel shouldve been worked into the bond franchise years ago
