so I went and seen Scott Pilgram vs. the world and it is my fav. movie off all time now. it just flows together with epic ness from the book with a combination of video games. Now on that note i seen the expendables and it was horrible. it was just a regular shoot them up movie. it felt like one of those steven segul movies that get released straight to dvd. how could poissibly get #1 at the box office???

I've no interest whatsoever in seeing SCOTT PILGRIM, but I'll certainly be checking out THE EXPENDABLES very soon. To each his own. :)

I'm not surprised Expendables did so well, I am however surprised that Scott Pilgrim didn't. I guess it was just too off the wall for most (note, I have not seen it, I'm just interested in it).

I think Scott Pilgrim will have legs. I didn't see it yet but I intend to. Now, a movie like Expendables has a nostagic appeal for us who grew up in the 80s so that's why it opened # 1. Now, if Eat Pray Love was # 1 I'd renounce my citizenship and move to Columbia... B)

I think they way over-estimated the commercial appeal of Scott Pilgrim; it's a little cult movie, with a little cult audience, and it probably would have done brisk, profitable business if it had been released at an off-peak month (as Kick-[censored] did). But while "based on the hippest comic book in town!", "from the director of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead!" and "stuffed with references to 80s and 90s video games!" is enough to absolutely enthrall a small audience, to the general public it means nothing, certainly not relative to "the ultimate action movie!" or "Julia Roberts adapts best-selling chick-lit!" or "Will Ferrel gets into more wacky hijinks!"

I like how absolutely every negative review of The Expendables manages to fit "direct to video" in there somewhere.

I loved THE EXPENDABLES. I saw that some critics blasted it as cliched and cheesy which just proves that those dumbass critics totally missed the point. The movie was supposed to be cliched and cheesy - it's a homage to the 1980s action movies.

Great movie.

Yeah, along with the complaints that "Schwarzenegger and Willis are only in it for one scene!" (as though their schedules were wide open and Stallone simply couldn't be bothered to give them bags of screentime) and "Stallone and Statham get a lot of focus, but there's no development of the secondary Expendables" (as though the world had been really looking forward to detailed characterisation for Steve Austin and Terry Crews), as well as the insinuation that anyone who enjoys THE EXPENDABLES must be a moronic meathead.

It might have something to do with the fact that Michael Cera plays the same character in every movie.

"Oh wow, I am awkward, skinny, and dorky"

I think that if he and Justin Long made an awkward teen movie a film together, the Earth would implode.

Yes. Cera's definitely wearing on audiences, especially since his track record is full of under-performers and flops. That alone goes a long way towards explaining why SCOTT PILGRIM isn't a big smash. It's a shame, since SCOTT PILGRIM is an absolute blast (for my money, it's the most entertaining outing of the summer), and almost certainly the best flick Cera has done.

That said, it'll probably have legs. According to reports, it has a Cinemascore of A-. If it doesn't find an audience in theaters, it sure will on DVD.

Maybe after this flop Cera will sign up for the ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT movie...

It's been out for three days.

I don't think it qualifies as a "cult film" yet.

I meant cult in the sense that it's something with a niche audience, i.e. not a likely summer blockbuster.

Saw Scott Pilgrim on Saturday and absolutely loved it! To the point that I'm going to go out of my way to read the books.(Which I had never heard of before the movie.)
I think I'm in love with Alison Pill as Kim Pine now.
