Co-Wrote one of my favorite bond films (DAF), so i can't say i don't feel sad. Similar to AMC Hornet, Diamonds Are Forever was one of the first Bond films i ever saw. The movie is always a fun ride, no matter how many people say otherwise.

I can tell from your screenname you are a big DAF fan! :D

:) Yeah, i guess my name does give it away somewhat.
One of the things i never got about DAF is the sometimes extreme hate it gets. I mean, the movie isn't without its flaws of course(Connery phoning in his performance, Blofeld in drag, ect.), but i find it to be a very re-watchable bond film. Yes, it isn't the best follow up they could have gone with for OHMSS, but it knows what kind of movie it is and goes with that all the way, which means that the film feels like nothing is forced upon you. The movie just wants you to have fun for 2 hours.

I am not a big fan of DAF...

However it's interesting to note that in the early 1980s a poll among members of the 007 fan club had the majority list DAF as their favorite 007 movie (that's right, above the likes of OHMSS, Goldfinger and TSWLM).

You can make the case that Tom Mankiewicz was the second-most important screenwriter in the series after Richard Maibuam. I've said it before and I'll say it again: his commentary track on Live And Let Die is very entertaining and provides a lot of insight into how movies are written. He's also very honest, and critiques himself (in partcular how the Rose Carver character was killed).

Just curious: has TCM done an "in memoriam" sequence for Mankiewicz? Also wondering if his cousin, Ben Mankiewicz, has referenced Tom's passing?

Rest in peace, Mr. Mankiewicz. Your witty dialogues made Bond much more enjoyable at the beginning of the 70's. They helped to make these movies worthwhile despite their obvious flaws.

Whatever else one might think about DAF, LALD and TMWTGG, they all had some well written, witty lines in them. Anyone who could insert the likes of "As La Rochefocauld observed, 'humility is the worst form of conceit'", and not get it cut out by the producers commands respect. I watched LALD yesterday and very much enjoyed it, probably more than when I was younger. Tom Mankiewicz received sole credit for that one.

A sad loss.

He was a part of The Man With The Golden Gun, a great Bond, dare i say it could be considered the 2nd cult Bond movie (behidn OHMSS), a loyal following, it holds a certain uniqueness and one of the last Bonds when the locale was nearly a character in itself, the Bond badguy being like a combo of Red Grant and Goldfinger and one of the most loved, it was the 3rd highest rated on IMDB's favorite Bond villain poll... and of course Tom's dialogue.
