Hi,

just bought the blu-ray 3-pack yesterday with the man with the golden gun and while watching it, i began to wonder where the scaramanga island was supposed to be according to the movie. I mean, everyone knows that the filming location was in Thailand in the Phuket area, but i began to wonder what the location actually looks like (in reality) where the island was supposed to be located within the movie. After all, we have beautiful tools like Google Earth and the associated Panoramio pics. However, from the maps they show in the movie, i wasn't able to find the area in China for some reason.

Does anyone have an idea where this is and can send a Google Earth or Google Maps link? Are the maps in the movie even real? Thanks!

I believe in this thread one of the Cbn members, jamie00007 went to the location:

And he said he had some pics. Might be worthwhile messaging him to see if he still has them.

In fact, the location in Thailand that you referred to is exactly the location i'm not talking about - at least i think so unless they majorly messed with the maps in the movie and declared areas to be China that aren't. Because in the movie, the island was supposed to be somewhere in the chinese area and not Thailand. I was curious what the chinese area looked like that was _not_ used for filming - but surprisingly i didn't even find the matching area. I think i'll see whether i can somehow extract screenshots from the maps in the evening or so.

ok, i uploaded the maps i was talking about. Maybe someone else finds this interesting:

http://picasaweb.goo...e/bzeiss/TMWTGG

Map 1 shows the island on a map.
Map 2 is supposed to be a bigger scale version of Map 1. But it isn't and this is Thailand.
Map 3 is a shot from the navigation system of the plane. This is clearly a map of Thailand. I have marked the area red which is where Map 4 is located.
Map 4 is a zoom into the area of the Bond island. This is also clearly Thailand.
Map 5 is the same area of Maps 2-4 from Google maps.
Map 6 is the area that i suspect to be Map 1.

So what is Map 1? This almost looks like Taiwan making the originally intended location of the Scaramanga island the coastal chinese area north of taiwan (Map 6). Does anyone agree?

Looks like another case of 'location cheating' to me B)

Personally, I'm always keen on this kind of trivia, so I find this very interesting. Clearly, the producers had no clue about us Bond geeks getting their hands on technology like DVD still frames and Google Maps some 35 years later. I did a check on a location given in another movie (I believe it was something from GE), only to find out that the coordinates didn't even come close to where it should have been.

BTW, if you know where and when to look, the James Bond island movie location can be spotted in the background in TND.

It is indeed. Of course, this topic is about the fictional location of the island. I've been to the actual place, and here is one of my photos.

The first map is definitely the Taiwan area - you can see the Ryukyu islands to the east. The second, third, and fourth and are all, as you pointed out, Phang Nga Bay in Thailand, which isn't anywhere near Chinese waters.

As an aside, the island in the map, Ko Nom Sao, translates to "female breast island".

We all know it was filmed in Phanga Nga Bay in Thailand but the film script says "Red China".

I've been to Vietnam and the are a group of Karst islands exactly the same as Phang Nga Bay in northeast Vietnam bordering China called - Halong Bay.

Its another tourist location and was featured in the French film Indochine. It makes sense that in 1974 the Chinese were still supplying the North Vietnamese who next year would roll into Saigon.

Caught between Commmunist China and North Vietnam Scaramangas island was situated in one of the most unreachable places in Asia.
