During his recent talk with Charlie Rose, Tarantino said, "never say never", but he doesn't currently have any intention of doing any novel adaptations.

Isn't he missing a word there?

Seems like I have to eat my hat, having predicted that "Inglourious Basterds" would flop. And maybe, riding that success, Harvey Weinstein will urge Tarantino to actually DO a spy series.

Having said that, I am very interested to see how much "Basterds" drops at the second week of its grosses. If it has legs, Tarantino might do the announced pre- and sequel of the "Basterds" first.

However, I still think that Tarantino has the biggest ego in show business. Being rejected by EON will always sting him and provoke him to talk about his "Casino Royale" version and that he wants to do his own spy thing. But if he really does it he is putting himself up for a mighty fall - if it weren´t successful he´d be the laughing stock. Then again, with his ego, he might not even consider to fail.

Make no mistake, I do think he is a very interesting director and I do like his films. Although I find the ethic dimensions of his treatment of violence questionable.

My conviction is still that Bernard Samson (perhaps even Deighton in general) is entirely the wrong stuff for Tarantino. If memory serves he has had the option to do a Modesty Blaise. A proper adaption, not this prequel he helped along. And while I fear the worst for one of my all-time-favourite heroines I have to concede that his would be more along his lines. If done well this could be terrific. An even better choice would be Matt Helm. If Tarantino should get either of them into his sights I'd be very interested.
