Caught this movie on AMC last night. Is it the greatest psychological thriller ever or a decent movie with a terrible ending? I have not seen many Michael Douglas films but will definitely check out more now. I couldn't figure out who was behind it, he couldn't trust anyone everyone turned out to be part of it. Now the film does have quite a few plot holes ie, shooting the tire, falling off the roof. There were just too many variables for the game to be absolutely planned out. I was on the edge of my seat, or bed during the entire film and hated commercial breaks. What do you think of this film? What do you think of Michael Douglas as an actor?

I really like The Game and it's my favourite Fincher film. Se7en is great, but I'm slightly weary of serial killer flicks, the plot and subtext of The Game is more intriguing to me. Fight Club is good, but there's something about it that kind of rubs me the wrong way. Alien 3 and Panic Room are just OK, I've yet to see Zodiac, I haven't seen Benjamin Button either and am not particularly bothered.
I'm not sure how I feel about the ending. I think it plays better in retrospect, and on repeated viewings, than it does initially, when the gut reaction perhaps is to feel it's a bit of a cop-out. Bear in mind it's not supposed to be a realistic film, nor a film to be taken entirely literally necessarily. I think the ending may be cleverer than it first appears.
I like Michael Douglas a lot. He is not necessarily someone I would cite as one of my favourite actors, but I think he's a good one and I feel he's made quite a few worthwhile films. Besides The Game, I'd say Falling Down, The War of the Roses and Wall Street are his best films (of those I've seen). Romancing the Stone/Jewel of the Nile are great fun, and Fatal Attraction, Black Rain, A Perfect Murder, Disclosure and The Ghost and the Darkness aren't bad either. Come to think of it, the only film of his I've seen which I didn't think much of was Basic Instinct, possibly his most famous film. I look forward to the second Gordon Gekko film if it does ever gade made, I think the number of reboots, remakes, revivals and so forth in the air at the moment are tantamount to overkill, but I think that's one revisit with a lot of potential.

Man I havent thought of this film in a while. I've only seen it once, but boy did I enjoy it. I never thought of the ending as a cop out, although I did echo many critics of the time as I felt it was perhaps one twist too many, but in a way the twist did work, and I never saw it coming.

The film is magnificent! At first I thought: "Oh, another boring thriller of the row!". But thankfuly, I was all wrong! The film was great! One of the best in its kind! I have to say the ending was quite unexpectd! Sean Penn was relly good at it and maybe Michael Douglas's finest hour in lots of year's! The plot was unique, but it had its gaps from what I can remember(I saw it a couple of years ago). Terrific film overall!
Outstanding film! Maybe my favourite thriller! I was trying to watch it for many years and I finally got it a few months ago. The plot is ingenious, the performances brilliant! The atmosphere was very good, but the film very low-lit! I liked it a lot overall!
PS: Morgan Freeman is an excellent actor!
Se7en is great...

Yes after watching the ending again on youtube you can understand that it was a prank on his brother because he was such a jerk. It also lightens the mood until it leaves you somewhat hanging when he is unsure whether to join the girl for coffee.

Love the film. It's truly one of the few thrillers out there that really keeps you guessing from beginning to end.
From Se7en onwards, David Fincher has consistently delivered one excellent project after another. I always look forward to whatever he's planning next.

I am a big Fincher fan, but I have always found THE GAME to be somewhat lacking in comparison to his usual standards. Perhaps it is due to the disappointing pay-off, or partly it is because there is very little in the way of likeable characters. Still better than your average cinematic fare though.

I like THE GAME. It's an underrated outing, for sure. I'm not sure that it's quite one of my picks for the top-notch Fincher outings (ala SE7EN or ZODIAC), but I'll happily sit it in the second tier.

I loved THE GAME. It, along with the fantastic ZODIAC, stand as Fincher's two best films, IMO.

Another slice of quality from Fincher, I love the ending and don't see it as a cop out and couldn't really see it going anywhere else, look forward to the Blu Ray release.
