Hopefully whoever comes next will put some effort into writing a decent thriller, something that doesn't read like the literary equivalent of Die Another Day.

I'm not sure that Die Another Day deserves that kind of criticism, does it? B)

Seriously, though, I'm glad that there won't be a second Faulks Bond novel. DEVIL MAY CARE just may be the worst of the entire literary series. If the main character weren't named "James Bond", there's absolutely nothing about it that would have given it away as a Bond story.

I'm actually somewhat glad that they've yet to decide what to do. After the disaster that was DMC, I think that the publishers should take as much time as they need to make sure that the next book is actually good.

They should sign David Morrell.

I may be a bit off the pace here, but I personally did not like Devil May Care.

Through out the Bond book series I always found the Raymond Benson efforts the most rewarding.

Any supporters?

Yes, I really enjoyed the Benson books as well. I think, conceptually, they are all superior to DMC. But I did enjoy DMC as a solid continuation novel with great locations and set-pieces.

I've liked Devil May Care very much.

I just wonder if IFP would let me officially publish my fan fic "Reflection of Darkness" as the new Bond book. B)

I'd actually love to see a book that features James Bond as a raw recruit to the Double O Section. Kinda like literary Bond meets Daniel Craig from Casino Royale. As revealed in the CR novel, Bond was active for years as 007 before the events of Casino Royale. So it would be interesting to see a slightly younger Bond, who is perhaps less darker and less hardened than the character from Flemming's books, whos still training to be the perfect machine. It would be great to learn how he first met Mathis (maybe elaborate on the events briefly mentioned in passing in CR)or his early encounters with SMERSH during the dawn of the Cold War.

Actually, this event has been covered somewhere in the 007 universe. To say anymore would be spoiling, but it was revealed quite recently...

You mean in the Casino Royale movie?

I'm talking about the books, where the story of their meeting is different. Bond and Mathis had already worked together prior to the events of the first book, on some 'other' Casino job against some Romanians. That would be an interesting story to learn about.

I do not believe [dark] is talking about the CR movie meeting of Bond and Mathis. But to say more may warrant a spoiler alert for this thread, so perhaps it's worth someone starting a new thread regarding this meeting with such an alert (if they haven't already) to expand on this.

Nope, sorry, should have specified I meant the literary 007 universe.
