I was watching Quantum of Solace in HMV today with the girlfriend. (It was playing on Blu Ray on a massive screen)

It's never struck me before, but M's speech about florists just doesn't make sense. I asked my girlfriend and she was rather confused, aswell.

Could anyone attempt to explain M's lines?

"When someone says that they have people everywhere, you expect it to be hyperbole. Lots of people say that. Florists use that expression. It doesn't mean that they have people in the bloody room. "

Do florists really have people everwhere? B)

Probably your question should be directed towards florists.

Ask 'em, and then let us know will you.

And if he cannot find one, then they don't have people everywhere. And if he can, then they do. Opportunity to go outside into the open air a bit.

Florists would use the term "we have people everywhere" meaning they have delevery people everywhere. Basically saying that if you order flowers from us, we can get it delivered anywhere.

It means ‘Florist say “We have people everywhere.”’ Not sure what’s hard to understand about that.

I didn't understand the significance of florists having people everwhere, lol.

I really have no idea about florists, hence why I felt confused.

You mean you haven't bought this girlfriend of yours some flowers?

Panache, young Matthew. Buy her some flowers. Perfect excuse to test the theory.

NB don't make it a wreath.

Okay, fair enough. You need to learn about florists.

The first thing you should know about florists is they have people everywhere.

Never heard of FTD? Stands for Florists' Transworld Delivery. You live in one city and want to deliver flowers to someone in another city, or somewhere outside of your florist's delivery area, you buy the flowers from your guy, and he FTDs it to a florist in the city where you want it delivered. The delivery florist gets the money credited to him, but your guy gets a commission for selling it.

Every florist with a picture on its door of Mercury holding a bouquet of flowers is a member of FTD, and that's pretty much all the reputable florists that like to stay in business.

In fact, you could call them a "transworld consortium"...

I thought the mob with the Mercury-like logo was called Interflora.

I love the humour in that scene, I got the line myself, although I prefer the one about Mitchel's Christmas Present's and Craig's deadpan delivery of the reply to M's comment in that scene.

Yes, Matthew, over the coming years you'll find that florists become indepensible.

And like some of us, you'll probably end up with their number on speed-dial.

Hence - as has been pointed out - they have branches everywhere.

The mantra of most of the bigger, more internationally organised florists (such as Interflora) is that, yes, they have people everywhere and can deliver at the drop of a hat.

I really have no idea about florists...

You might need to if you want your girlfriend to stick around...(!).
