Where can I find all that there is to know regarding the opening scene in TSWLM?

Who did the jump?

His background? I understand great skier but novice jumper.

Where was the shooting done?

Were the jump and the ski chase at the same location?

Etc., etc.

Thanks in advance,

4A

P.S. The next jump? Been riding my motorcycle down into Mexico and found out about this.

Rick Sylvester did the jump. There is quite a bit about it on the 30years James Bond documentary that ITV did in '92. Its on youtube.

Who did the jump?

From Wikipedia:

Rick Sylvester is a Hollywood stuntman, most famous for his BASE jump using skis and parachute from Canada's Mount Asgard for the James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me (film)|The Spy Who Loved Me in July 1976.

His background? I understand great skier but novice jumper.

Also from Wikipedia:
In 1973, he skied off the top of [[El Capitan]] and descended 3000' by parachute. This was conceived as "the world's greatest ski jump". Already an expert skier, he spent 3 weeks learning sky diving to make this jump. He has since retired from stunt work.

Where was the shooting done?

Wikipedia can be your friend, you know: B)
While construction of the "Liparus" set continued, the second unit headed by John Glen departed for Mount Asgard where in July 1976 they staged the film's pre-credits sequence. Bond film veteran Willy Bogner captured the action staged by stuntman Rick Sylvester who earned $30,000 for the stunt.[8] This stunt cost $500,000 - the most expensive single movie stunt at that time.

Were the jump and the ski chase at the same location?

Not that I know of; the jump was shot by Willy Bogner and the ski chase was part of the second-unit work shot by John Glen and Ernest Day.

Etc., etc.

Thanks in advance,

4A

You're welcome, 4A.

And what a spectacular Bond moment that was! One of the best (If not the best Bond openings ever).

The information above posted by Blofeld is incorrect:

John Glen directed the actual Rick Sylvester jump on Mount Asgard, Canada, Alan Hume was his cameraman.

The bulk of the actual ski chase was shot in Switzerland by Willy Bogner.

Roger Moore's inserts were shot at Pinewood. B)

Did Sylvester do the ski chase also? I was always under the impression that the jumper and the skier were two different people. For some reason I thought the skier was Spider Sabich or Jean Claude Killy.

Wiki can often be wrong. I think the experts might be here.

If you really want to find out 'all that there is to know' about the ski-jump, get your hands on a copy of 'For My Eyes Only' by John Glen. The first chapter is devoted to the jump.
