Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth has been chosen to play thunder god Thor in Marvel Studios’s live-action film due out in theaters on May 20, 2011.

Thor will be directed by Kenneth Branagh (Much Ado About Nothing, Sleuth). Daniel Craig reportedly turned down the lead role of Thor.

For more scoop, check out Nikki Finke!

Hemsworth, 25, is best known for playing the father of Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) in the opening scenes of Star Trek, in theaters now.

Ummm...not too sure about this actor, hardly Thor like..Craig would have kicked serious B) in this role but agree, it was better he not do it.
Did Craig start the rumour online he was interested in it himself??

Things could have changed since I last heard. But I don't believe they even have a script yet. It's just one of those ideas they Branagh is working with. Hemsworth may be someone who's out there and being considered but I highly doubt that he's actually been attached to the project officially, especially cause this news is coming from two rumour sites. B) BUT that said... I liked him in Star Trek... very emotional scene.

Thanks for the info. B) You seem to be in the know. Anything on Bond 23 and the current financial woe rumours?

Here's some inside info for ya. I came within spitting distance of writing this movie. Guess I can talk about this now. I had two meetings in early December with Ken Branagh and Kevin Feige. I was one of "a very small number" of writers they were considering. Pitched my little heart out to the whole company and actually think I did pretty well. But, alas, I didn't get it.

I read now the movie has been pushed back to 2011. When I was in the mix, it was talked about as a 2010 release, which meant the writer was going to have to work fast. I don't know who got it, but I'm sure they've delivered a draft by now so I can believe casting is moving ahead.

You'll get no plot details from me (it's probably all changed now anyway). I will say Ken Branagh was very cool and Marvel is a great company. I also like the choice of Chris Hemsworth (if true). I think this will be an excellent movie. B)

Wow! B) I'm gobsmacked. Did Craig's name ever crop up or is this an online urban legend?

Trust me, I was too.

Never heard anything about Craig or any casting whatsoever. I actually think the Craig thing might just be an internet rumor.

Wasn't sure if you were going to jump in or not, Zencat. B) You really think they got a script done? That was FAST!

Well, remember at the time there was a crazy deadline -- that was one of the conditions of the whole thing. If they stuck to that, sure, they could be a few drafts down the road. But even if they aren't, they could still lock down an actor for Thor if the perfect actor comes along. It's not like Thor is a part that won't make the final script. B)

And I trust Nikki Finke (the orginal source of this news).

Apparently Craig was asked about Thor at a press conference when QoS was being released and he said he was approached, but turned it down.

Branagh is an interesting choice for director. Not that interested in Thor though.

They need to clone Dolph Lungren and cook up a 25 year old version. That man is(was) Thor.

This guy better start hitting the gym regularly.

If Fabio could act, he would be perfect.

I was thinking the same thing! But he can't act.

Thank goodness he can't and a bird would only fly into his face anyway. B)

You know Craig in his CR buff state would have been DA MAN!!!
This actor looks as far removed from a "Thor" than I can imagine.

Maybe I'm doing the character a great dis-service here, but I think Thor is well within Dolph's limited abilities. Besides, maybe his clone would be a better actor.

I would probably have little interest in seeing this film if Kenneth Branagh wasn't directing. His Hamlet was absolutely brilliant, and he seems the perfect choice for this property.

I always found the Thor comic, or the little I read about it, to be a rather bizarre Americanization of great Scandinavian folklore/legends/religion/whatever you want to call it (I'm Norwegian). They even gave him a secret identity!

And don't diss the Dolph, Master of the Universe. B)

I'm glad the project is moving forward, though I am not a Marvel fan (devoted to DC) I do like Thor. That guy doesn't have the size required though.

B) I think Dolph could have pulled it off back in the day...

Re:Craig: He's too old and too short(for Bond too but he pulls it off anyway) for Thor...Thor is a huge Nordic dude.

MORE 'THOR': Marvel Studios Casts UK Actor Tom Hiddleston As Nemesis Loki

So two unknowns in the leads (and not just Tobey Maguire level sorta-recognizable faces, we're talking complete nobodies here), a hero who speaks in ye olde Englishe, and a director with one previous foray into Hollywood popcorn fare 15 years ago that flopped.

Well they've got balls, I'll give them that.

I don't care for Thor. Even as a small kid I found him just a weak-a** hero.

Seems like this guy's getting the Swayze role in the no doubt ultra-relevant remake of Red Dawn too:
