As I understand it, Danjaq has to give their approval of any potential buyer of MGM's Bond shares before they can be sold. So, they are in quite a strong position, as far as that goes.IF MGM went bankrupt, wouldn't MGM's Bond shares divert to MGM's creditors to sell off?
I think precisely that would be a scenario EON probably has put much legal effort into the contracts to avoid at all costs. Just think about it, that would mean there
could be any number of 'partners' suddenly popping up in EON's boat. Out of the question certainly.

yep, MGM (or whatever studio ends up with the rights) cannot make a James Bond movie without Danjaq (EON). The bad news is that the visa versa also holds true.As I understand it, Danjaq has to give their approval of any potential buyer of MGM's Bond shares before they can be sold. So, they are in quite a strong position, as far as that goes.

Yeah, we use Eon when what we should really use is Danjaq. I've tried to switch, but it's hard. "Eon" has become kind of the catch all for the "film people."
...and its easier to spell.

Extension #6 on the way.

I suspect there is not limit to the number of extensions MGM can seek. There is one coming as soon as the current expires.

Meanwhile, speculation continues about whether the studio will sell off its share of rights to "The Hobbit" to co-production partner Warner Bros., whose New Line is overseeing project development with director Peter Jackson; shooting is set to begin in January. MGM executives would like to hold onto its share of the "Hobbit" rights as long as possible, but some lenders are lobbying for a sell-off to raise funds.
I sure hope that some lenders are also lobbying for a sell off of the Bond rights as well.

I can't say that I didn't expect this. I'm actually thinking we're going to see continuous extensions for the forseeable future. Hopefully MGM can clean this up in a manner that is satisfactory for everyone, although it's a shame that it's going to be done at the expense of the Craig Era.
Oh well, bring on Bond #7 (or end the franchise with QoS, either one would be acceptable to me at this point).

Yes, it's a damn shame, almost a repeat history of the Dalton '89 - 94 rights issues.
I suspect Eon will move like greased lightning as soon as they can, and everyone involved will want Craig as Bond. I also believe Craig is committed to playing Bond - and even if production doesn't start until the end of 2011, I still think he'll be in the lead role -- but the time out does seem like it will reduce the chances of him doing a 4th film as I suspect at 44-45 he may consider himself too old, especially as his Bond is so rough, tough, physical.
Who know??? It's in the lap of the Gods!!!

Yet, let´s not panic. It´s only July, a few months since EON gave their statement about waiting for the MGM situation to clear up. And BOND 23 never was supposed to come out this year. It´s still possible for EON to release the film next year as planned (I´m sure they have everything in place, working for it secretly).
Will MGM still get extensions this time next year?
I can´t believe that. Okay, I don´t want to believe that. But at some point the banks will stop this. And then the rights will be sold. This will take some time again, of course, but I believe BOND 23 will be in cinemas in 2013 at the latest.

MGM will hold out as long as possible. I´m just wondering why the banks still give them so much time?

I think you're right that behind the scenes Eon are preparing as much as they can, although script development has stopped, but it seems pretty clear that there must be a first, even a 2nd draft screenplay on their desks. Purvis, Wade, Morgan weren't hired for the sheer hell of it, they produced work. But, for the time being, no other real work can go on with the film. Once Eon re-start, with the rest of the script work, then pre-production, then the shoot, then post production, there's a whole year or a bit more taken up. If Bond 23 gets into pre-production by next Easter or summer, we can still see a 2012 - 50th Anniversary release and a 3rd Craig film.

I applaud your positivity!!! I hope you are right as the tabloids reporting that Bond 23 is over is certainly the most depressing thought. I'm sure Barbara and Mickey G won't want to keep us fans waiting too long. I certainly want to see in 2012 the 50th anniversary film in cinemas.MGM will hold out as long as possible. Let´s look at the facts.
EON needs MGM to function (or to give up their rights). Without a reliable distributor EON can only go so far with preproduction work.
I guess they have reached that point. The script work has gone as far as it can. And all the other members of the staff under contract for a possible 2010 or 2011 start just could not be asked anymore to clear their schedules since... well, nobody knows how long the MGM situation is going to go on. Thus, they officially informed these people to be free to take other assignments.
That´s all there is.
When the MGM situation is cleared up EON will resume work on Bond 23 pretty quickly. And this time they really got a head start since script work has already reached a solid phase.
Of course, that doesn´t mean that with a director coming on board the script could be tossed out and they would have to start from scratch (see Marc Foster...).

So in other "MGM is
ed up" News the Darren Aronofsky Robocop remake has been canceled.
http://coronacominga...-remake-offline
That's probably for the best, though I'm slightly interested in what an Aronofsky Robocop would be like. It didn't need to be remade anyway. Lots of remakes are inbound. I can't believe they're remaking Total Recall too. And Red Dawn. Talk about an MGM

yeah but if the rights get sold to another praying sony maybe we can have a better quality film. if it is like that i mean if it gets sold to another then we no longer have to wait on mgm with a possible years to wait and constant worry wether or not it will survive. with another company it doesnt have to put of this situation? i think... lolAt this point I think we need to start rooting for MGMs survival as that is probably the quickest path to Bond 23 production. If MGM fails, and the rights go up for sale, we may have to wait through several more months of auctions and negotiations, etc.

I'd rather EON freed itself from the albatross that is MGM for good, and found a stable partner in another studio - even if it means a longer wait for the next film.
Even if Bond 23 somehow miraculously manages to receive funding via MGM, we'll just have to go through the same dance again when Bond 24 comes around.

Kiefer Sutherland is James Bond, fighting the evil villian El Grande, played by Michael Moore, with his evil cohort played by Alec Baldwin and mistress played by Janeane Garofalo.
Rupert Murdoch will play M, with Sarah Palin as Miss. Moneypenney.
It will be directed by Trey Parker and Seth MacFarlane.
